Ford Motor Company is recalling 199,085 2014-2015 Fusion, Lincoln MKZ and 2015 Mustang vehicles sold across 10 states due to numerous reports of brake lights that stay on continuously and vehicles randomly shifting out of park and rolling away.

In a recall notice, the company says that vehicles sold or registered in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Hawaii were being recalled due to having “suspect brake pedal stop bumpers that may not meet performance requirements.”

The notice says that exposure to certain environmental conditions, such as high temperatures, high humidity and salt air can cause the brake pedal bumper to disintegrate and separate from the brake pedal.

“A separated brake pedal bumper can cause the brake lights to illuminate continuously, causing confusion to other drivers and increasing the risk of a crash,” the notice says. “On automatic transmission vehicles, a missing brake pedal bumper can allow the driver to shift the vehicle out of the “PARK” position without depressing the brake, allowing the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of injury.”

Ford Dealers To Replace Pedal Bumpers Free Of Charge

The company says it used warranty data and supplier records to identify the affected population and that it is conducting research to obtain the latest vehicle registrations, which may cause the number of recalled vehicles to change slightly.

The company says that dealers will replace the brake pedal bumpers and clutch pedal bumpers free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Mar. 3, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

Ford is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

In December, Ford announced two new major recalls, which included nearly 250,000 F-150 pickup trucks of various model years and its Transit cargo van. In the case of the F-150 pickup, Ford has announced it was recalling 184,698 F-150 trucks from 2021 and 2022 model years.

The auto giant said the reason for the recall was that underbody heat and noise insulators could loosen and touch the aluminum driveshaft, damaging the driveshaft and causing it to fracture.
