Tesla Model S, Model 3 Recall Overview:

  • Who: Tesla is recalling more than 475,000 of certain of its Model 3 and Model S electric vehicles.
  • Why: The recall is due to issues with rear view cameras on Tesla’s 2017-20 Model 3 vehicles and front trunk latch issues on its 2014-21 Model S.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide and is in addition to a recall of 200,000 vehicles in China.

Tesla Inc. is recalling nearly half a million of its electric vehicles (EVs) due to issues with some of its Model S vehicles’ front hood latches and some of its Model 3 vehicles’ rear view cameras.

The recall affects more than 475,000 Model 3 and Model S EVs, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which says it is also looking into another camera issue. The NHTSA is also looking into Tesla’s driver assistant system, Reuters reports

There have been a total of 2,301 warranty claims and 601 field reports made due to the alleged issues, Tesla said in documents provided by The Verge.

The affected vehicles are model year 2014-21 Model S vehicles and 2017-20 Model 3 vehicles. The recalled vehicles are in addition to roughly 200,000 that are being recalled in China due to the same issues, Electrek reports

No Injuries, Deaths Related To Recalls, Tesla Says

The NHTSA found that, in affected Model 3 vehicles, the harness for the rearview camera can be damaged when the trunk lid is closed, causing the camera image not to show.

“A rearview camera that does not function reduces the driver’s rear view, increasing the risk of a crash,” the agency wrote.

The problems with Model S stem from an issue with the latch on the front of the vehicles’ hood, which can fail and cause the hood to pop open without warning, according to the NHTSA

“The front trunk latch assembly may be misaligned, preventing the secondary hood latch from engaging,” the NHTSA wrote, adding the issue causes the vehicle to be non-compliant with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Tesla says it is not aware of any instances of injury or death having occured on account of the alleged issues cited in the recall.

The company says it will inspect and fix the issues free of charge, and is planning to send out recall notices to drivers on Feb. 18, 2022, according to the NHTSA.
