Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Minivan Recall Overview:

  • Who: Stellantis is recalling an estimated 19,808 2017 and 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids.
  • Why: The plug-in hybrid minivans pose a potential fire risk.
  • Where: The recall is effective in the United States and Canada.

Stellantis is recalling almost 20,000 hybrid minivans after discovering there have been at least 12 spontaneous fires in the vehicles that occurred while they were parked and turned off.

Stellantis issued the recall of an estimated 19,808 plug-in hybrid model years 2017 and 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans on Feb. 11.

The recall is to resolve the potential fire risk. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

Stellantis said the fires were discovered after a “routine company review of customer data.”

The data review led to an internal investigation that discovered 12 fires among model year 2017 and 2018 vehicles. All were parked and turned off while eight were connected to chargers, Stellantis said.

The company said it is unaware of any related injuries or accidents. Until further notice, the company is advising owners of the affected hybrid vehicles to refrain from recharging them and to park them away from structures and other vehicles.

Stellantis is currently working to confirm the cause of the fires, it said.

“The remedy, when developed, will be provided free of charge, and affected customers will be advised when they may schedule service,” the company said.

The recall encompasses vehicles sold in the United States (about 16,741), Canada (about 2,317) and another 750 outside North America, the company said.

Stellantis To Contact Affected Customers By Mail

Stellantis will contact customers if their vehicles are affected. Notification by mail is expected to begin in February.

The news comes as Fiat Chrysler, a part of Stellantis, faces a class action lawsuit in Canada asserting that the Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid vehicles have a dangerous electrical system defect that causes spontaneous fires and puts them and other Canadian families at risk.

The Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid was subject to a Transport Canada Recall in June of 2020 over reports of a defect in the electrical system that could cause spontaneous fires.

Nearly 3,500 vehicles were included in the recall; however, several owners had already experienced unexpected fires in their Pacificas.

Several of these Pacifica owners joined in a proposed class action lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler alleging the carmaker should have known of the defect and done more to protect consumers.

Meanwhile, Stellantis is facing a class action lawsuit alleging it is adding exorbitant “destination fees” on cars at dealerships in order to maximize profits and deceiving customers about the nature of those fees.
