Hyundai and Kia fire risk warning overview:

  • Who: Insurance company Steamship Mutual has warned its members over a Hyundai and Kia safety recall.
  • Why: The insurance company said its members are shipping companies that should be aware of the vehicles’ fire risks.
  • Where: The Hyundai and Kia recall is active in the United States.
  • What are my options: Advance Auto Parts carries parts for Kia and Hyundai vehicles.

An insurance company whose customers are shipping companies has warned its members about a safety recall notice affecting 570,000 Hyundai Motor America and Kia America vehicles that can catch fire.

Steamship Mutual said its members involved in the transportation of new and used vehicles such as car carrier, ferry and containership operators should be aware of a recall of Hyundai and Kia models at great risk of fire, Seatrade Maritime News reported.

“We urge all members to take appropriate measures to prevent these cars being loaded on board all ships,” the company said.

In March, Hyundai Motor America urgently recalled more than 570,000 Santa Fe, Santa Cruz and Kia Carnival vehicles, as they can catch fire while parked or being driven.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the urgent fire risk notices March 17.

The recall applies to 567,912 Hyundai 2019-2023 Santa Fe, 2021-2023 Santa Fe hybrid, 2022-2023 Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid and Santa Cruz vehicles. It also applies to 3,555 units of Kia Carnival vehicles manufactured between 2022 and 2023. Hyundai is Kia’s parent company.

According to the recalls, some of the vehicles are equipped with tow hitch harnesses with circuit boards that can suffer an electrical short, which can result in a fire.

“An electrical short could increase the risk of a trailer tow hitch harness module fire while driving or while the vehicle is parked with the ignition off,” the Hyundai recall states.

Shipping companies that carry the vehicles should be careful, company said

Kia and Hyundai have recommended vehicles be parked outside away from homes and other structures until the recall has been completed, but claim the vehicles are safe to drive.

Steamship Mutual urged its members who may carry affected vehicles “to take note of these recall notices and expeditiously consider implementing appropriate risk assessments and mitigation measures, given the enhanced risk that has been identified.”

Meanwhile, Hyundai North America has been in the news recently over a pair of class action lawsuits, the approval of a class action settlement and a pair of recalls the automaker initiated in March over safety concerns.

  1. George Walczak says:

In January 2023 I purchased a brand new Hyundai Tucson at 2600 miles we were sitting at a red light. The car started shaking real bad black smoke out of the tailpipe and fumes in the cabin, my wife and I jumped out of the car at a busy intersection, fearing for our lives. They should never have happened with a brand new car I want to get in on a class action lawsuit. George Walczak 727-355-5494. Thank you.
