Rand McNally GPSRand McNally has been hit with a class action lawsuit from consumers who claim that the company’s TND Tablet 80 Truck GPS fails to work as advertised.

Plaintiff James Van Zeeland claims that he purchased a new TND Tablet 80 from Rand McNally for $449.99 in May 2019.

Van Zeeland states that he wanted a reliable, accurate and quality navigation GPS system and was led to believe that Rand McNally has such a product.

The plaintiff says he has experienced numerous problems with his TND Tablet 80, such as the GPS system displaying his location on a parallel or nonexistent road, directing him to an incorrect location, and taking him in the opposite direction.

While driving through cities, the TND Tablet 80 would allegedly “spin and jump between overpasses and underpasses.” The plaintiff argues that this defect left him without a reliable method to navigate through cities to his destination.

The plaintiff claims that he has experienced these problems most of the time that he used this GPS system. Van Zeeland also claims that he attempted to use the TND Tablet 80 in numerous trucks and even his personal vehicle, but he experienced the same problems.

Van Zeeland reportedly contacted Rand McNally to complain about the problems that he was encountering with his GPS system, but was met with a pre-recorded statement that Rand McNally was aware of the problems with the tablet, such as no GPS signal or providing incorrect directions and was working on alleviating the problem.

In August 2019, Van Zeeland claims that he spoke to a representative at Rand McNally and was sent a new mount for the TND Tablet 80 called a “slice.” However, the plaintiff claims that the slice did not fix the problem.

When he contacted the defendant again to address the issue, he was allegedly told by another representative to reset his TND Tablet 80. After resetting the GPS system, the product reportedly still did not work and the plaintiff requested a refund from the defendant.

In October 2019, the plaintiff claims that he contacted Rand McNally to request a refund and was told that the problem was not with the product, but the conditions in the truck. The defendant allegedly refused to provide him with a refund.

“The TND Tablet 80’s frequent and persistent failures have rendered it useless and Van Zeeland been forced to stop using it,” the Rand McNally class action lawsuit claims.

“Had Defendant’s advertisements, statements, or other materials and communications informed Van Zeeland of the defective TND Tablet 80 and the lack of any fix, as well as Defendant’s refusal to remedy the problems, Van Zeeland would not have opted to purchase the TND Tablet 80, much less pay the amount he did for it.”

The plaintiff claims to have suffered loss as a result of the defendant’s misconduct including the $449.99 that he paid to purchase the product.

Proposed Class Members include: “All current and former purchasers of the Rand McNally TND Tablet 80.”

  1. Paulo Dias says:

Same issues here the tablet tnd 80will freeze up with no rhyme or reason and doesn’t matter if it’s camera mode or gps .. tried all updates etc. still happening …don’t think I’ve had one last more than a year and a half.

  2. Doug says:

My tnd 80 was a really good tablet until it stopped working. Map updated wouldn’t take, freeze in the middle of navigation, couldn’t find GPS. Free Lifetime map updated was one of the reasons I bought it. That never happened either.

  3. Robert Dess says:

Hold on, just the 80?!?! My TND740 and 750 were junk! I finally switched to garmin!

  4. Keith Richardson says:

My Rand McNally constantly freeze up. When you shut it down to reboot it, it’s still in the same frozen location and won’t reset. Usually it takes a full day to get off the frozen screen. On some occasions it will take you opposite of the address you supposed to go to. The routing suxs as well it takes you on longer routes that unnecessarily and the reason I know is I use my phone for a back up which keeps me on the best interstate to run.

  5. Michael K Dennis says:

I have Rand McNally TND80B. I have had nothing but problems with this GPS. I should have bought $ 450.00 worth of toilet paper as I would have gotten more use out of that. I will never buy a Rand McNally product again. I have since purchased a Garmin and couldn’t be happier with it.

  6. Eugene Mercer says:

I also have a Rand McNally TND Tablet 80B that is stuck on the Rand McNally screen. I’ve tried the reset button and still, it’s stuck on the Rand McNally screen. Called for support and was told to buy a new one because they do not support updates for this model. I would definitely be interested in joining the class action. It is unfair and unethical for a manufacturer to take advantage of it customer base (truckers).

  7. Scott Brown says:

I also have the TND80B GPS from rand mcnally, I’ve had nothing but problems from it, to having to replace a batter, to replacing the GPS antenna, to replacing a flashing screen. This GPS device has been nothing but problems. The on board camera also works.. Sometimes. When it feels like it.

  8. Earl schroeder says:

My unit never worked right out of the box sent it in for repairs and 6 no later got it back used it once and kept quiting and had to stop to reset it truck would be in field near highway and would want to reroute me when traveling down highway After next repair it lost operating system and they said obsolete buy a new one

  9. Scott Ogborn says:

In totality for me, I have gone through 4 TND 80 and 85’s since they came on the market, having to send back RMA for repair or replace since the truck stops would give you only a few short days to exchange or refund. Every GPS had different Android OS running, a total nightmare for MOST of us who invested in this $550+ device like we’re made of money or have it falling out our pockets. My last device RMA replacement has been a blessing since I’ve actually had it the longest and maybe 1 issue overall I fixed on my own but WHY did it take 3 previous units to work correctly?

  10. MICKEL THOMAS says:

I also have the Rand McNally TND80 and it is doing the exact same problems as described. I am a professional commercial driver and I was able to replace my first of two within the first 30 days off purchase. Second replacement began exhibiting these problems over the course of time. I would be interested in joining this lawsuit in I’m not too late.
