Rand McNally GPSRand McNally has been hit with a class action lawsuit from consumers who claim that the company’s TND Tablet 80 Truck GPS fails to work as advertised.

Plaintiff James Van Zeeland claims that he purchased a new TND Tablet 80 from Rand McNally for $449.99 in May 2019.

Van Zeeland states that he wanted a reliable, accurate and quality navigation GPS system and was led to believe that Rand McNally has such a product.

The plaintiff says he has experienced numerous problems with his TND Tablet 80, such as the GPS system displaying his location on a parallel or nonexistent road, directing him to an incorrect location, and taking him in the opposite direction.

While driving through cities, the TND Tablet 80 would allegedly “spin and jump between overpasses and underpasses.” The plaintiff argues that this defect left him without a reliable method to navigate through cities to his destination.

The plaintiff claims that he has experienced these problems most of the time that he used this GPS system. Van Zeeland also claims that he attempted to use the TND Tablet 80 in numerous trucks and even his personal vehicle, but he experienced the same problems.

Van Zeeland reportedly contacted Rand McNally to complain about the problems that he was encountering with his GPS system, but was met with a pre-recorded statement that Rand McNally was aware of the problems with the tablet, such as no GPS signal or providing incorrect directions and was working on alleviating the problem.

In August 2019, Van Zeeland claims that he spoke to a representative at Rand McNally and was sent a new mount for the TND Tablet 80 called a “slice.” However, the plaintiff claims that the slice did not fix the problem.

When he contacted the defendant again to address the issue, he was allegedly told by another representative to reset his TND Tablet 80. After resetting the GPS system, the product reportedly still did not work and the plaintiff requested a refund from the defendant.

In October 2019, the plaintiff claims that he contacted Rand McNally to request a refund and was told that the problem was not with the product, but the conditions in the truck. The defendant allegedly refused to provide him with a refund.

“The TND Tablet 80’s frequent and persistent failures have rendered it useless and Van Zeeland been forced to stop using it,” the Rand McNally class action lawsuit claims.

“Had Defendant’s advertisements, statements, or other materials and communications informed Van Zeeland of the defective TND Tablet 80 and the lack of any fix, as well as Defendant’s refusal to remedy the problems, Van Zeeland would not have opted to purchase the TND Tablet 80, much less pay the amount he did for it.”

The plaintiff claims to have suffered loss as a result of the defendant’s misconduct including the $449.99 that he paid to purchase the product.

Proposed Class Members include: “All current and former purchasers of the Rand McNally TND Tablet 80.”

  4. Donna Anderson says:

I bought a RM T80 when they first came out. All types of glitches, most of which were described above. Now I tried to use it again for the GPS feature and I can’t get the GPS to even open anymore after troubleshooting it for 2 days and trying everything that others had said that would fix the issue. Basically I have a very expensive Tablet, which renders it useless because I bought it for the trucking GPS feature.

When I had started trucking on 2016, I was in need of a GPS , of course. I bought a used RV GPS from Ebay. It worked awesome, still works. Updates aren’t supported no more, but that was a good GPS. Built sold, the edges were rubber, it was made to last. Then I thought, well time for something newer, and possibly better. Bought a new TND 80S off of Ebay from a dealer. Off the hope, it worked flawless, I loved it. After about a 10 months, it started loosing the GPS function. On order to get it back usually a reset would work. But then it started to happen continuously. Then the battery quit charging. Bought a different charger, that helped but it got worse. Then the camera stopped working, eventually it wouldn’t even start up. Couldn’t start it, I guessed due to the battery being dead. I had contacted tech support 4 different times, told them the situation and they told me that they are looking into the issues. That’s as far as it ever good so I still have it but it is a book weight in the box. Very expensive, was very frustrating, lost a lot of hair dealing with that thing.
Bought a Garmin diesel GPS, nothing but problems to, getting lost, never proper directions. So ended up buying a cheap Chinese model, well they are all made in China but this is a XGODY. Been using it for over 2 years, totally flawless. The only concern is that you have to download updates…but still using it..

  9. Michael Dudley says:

I owned a TND 80 and had all the issues described in the article. I tried resetting, new SD cards, deleating apps to free up memory. Everything to include doing a hard download of new software logged into RM. Nothing worked. Was told by RM the unit was out of warranty as I had it for a couple of years so I didn’t have any ppw at this time. I stopped using it and bought another unit.

  10. John Caldwell says:

TND 80 shows driving off the road, locks up etc Did everything tech support suggested. They just blow you off if you can get through. Absolutely useless, bought a Garmin DEZL works well no issues wasted hundreds of dollars on that Rand McNally.
