Victims of IED Attacks Might Be Able to File a Roadside Bomb Injury Lawsuit

According to a recent report released by the Pentagon in April 2019, the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq by Iranian militants or Iran-supplied IEDs is now thought to be over 600. Prior reports have estimated that approximately 500 U.S. troops were killed, but that number has been bumped up to 603.

The new figure is an increase over a previous estimate of approximately 500 deaths.

This new estimation suggests that Iran contributed to approximately one out of every six American military casualties in Iraq. Iran has, for many years, been connected with training and funding the terrorist groups that were responsible for the attacks on U.S. citizens and service members in Iraq. 17 percent of the U.S. casualties between 2003 and 2011 are attributable to Iran-back militants or devices.

In addition to IEDs, these fatalities were also caused by explosively formed penetrators, improvised rocket-assisted munitions, rockets, mortars, rocket-propelled grenades, small-arms, and snipers.

Those individuals who are critically hurt or loved ones who lost a family member due to an IED attack may be able to take legal action against Iran, as well as the international banks that helped finance these attacks. For victims still recovering from the injuries and dealing with the high medical expenses and changes in day to day life, legal compensation may help them cover their expenses and rebuild their lives.

Families Fight Back with Roadside Bomb Lawsuit

Victims who were injured by IED attacks, as well as their families, have filed multiple lawsuits attempting to collect compensation for these injuries and fatalities.

According to one father whose son was killed by a roadside bomb, the country has gotten away with murder. Plaintiff Patrick F., a named plaintiff in a class action lawsuit regarding Iran IED deaths, told Military Times he hopes the trial “will help set the record straight so that our leaders learn from past mistakes and come to recognize the full magnitude of what Iran did to my son Clay and his fellow soldiers who were serving in Iraq.”

Another such roadside bomb lawsuit from 2014 accused banks of financing terror attacks. More than 200 individuals participated as plaintiffs, citing more than 50 attacks on American citizens working in and stationed in Iraq over the course of the war. The lawsuit accuses multiple banks of helping to finance the violent activities due to connections to Iran.

Some of the banks named as defendants include the Royal Bank of Scotland, Credit Suisse, Standard Chartered, Barclays and HSBC. The roadside bomb injury lawsuit filed on behalf of those harmed by these IED attacks say that the banks were not directly working with the militants. Instead, these banks allegedly transferred billions of dollars on behalf of Iran.

This lawsuit from a few years ago is not the first of many connections between Wall Street and Iran. Federal prosecutors had already accused the same banks of transferring money on Iran’s behalf in violation of United States sanctions. Many victims ultimately suffered fatal injuries but others continue to suffer from injuries such as paralysis, TBIs and more.

Holding Banks Accountable for Terrorist Attacks

When the connection was discovered between the banks’ activity and the financing terrorist attacks effort from Iran, this led victims to come together and hold those banks accountable for the role that they may have played, even though indirectly, with the deadly IED attacks that harmed numerous American citizens and left many family members without their loved ones.

Holding these banks accountable is a mission that plenty of families have made a priority in light of injuries or lost loved ones. These IED attacks have had far reaching consequences and ripple effects throughout the duration of the war.

Filing a roadside bomb injury lawsuit could be the only opportunity for those victims to recover compensation associated with medical expenses, lost wages and other damages tied to IED attacks. The lawsuit alleges that these IED attacks might have been prevented if the banks were not involved in these financing operations.
