GM engines class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Rachel Buchholz filed a class action lawsuit against General Motors LLC.
  • Why: Buchholz claims GM knowingly sold model year 2014-2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles allegedly equipped with defective 2.4-liter engines.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Missouri federal court.

General Motors sold and leased certain Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles containing defective 2.4-liter engines that are unable to properly utilize their engine oil, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Rachel Buchholz claims GM knew when selling the vehicles that the 2.4-liter engines contained a defect that allegedly caused them to improperly burn off and/or “consume abnormally high amounts of oil.”

Buchholz argues the 2.4-liter engines contain piston and piston ring assemblies that were faultily designed and low-tension oil rings—installed by GM—that allegedly do not “maintain sufficient tension to keep oil in the crank case.”

“The Oil Consumption Defect is a substantial safety concern because it causes excessive oil consumption that cannot be reasonably anticipated or predicted, and causes the engine to run while dangerously low on engine oil,” states the GM class action.

Buchholz wants to represent a Missouri class of current and former owners or lessees of a model year 2014-2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles equipped with a 2.4-liter engine.

Alleged GM engine defect puts Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain vehicle owners in danger, says class action

Consumers who own a Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain vehicle with the allegedly defective 2.4-liter engine are in danger of engine fire, unexpected engine shutdowns, vehicle jerking, and unexpected loss of power, among other things, the GM class action alleges.

“The Oil Consumption Defect is unreasonably dangerous because it can cause engine failure while the Class Vehicles are in operation at any time and under any driving conditions or speeds,” states the GM class action.

Buchholz claims GM is in violation of the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act. She is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory relief along with an award of compensatory, actual, and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

A separate class action lawsuit was filed against GM in 2019 by a consumer arguing the automaker sold Chevrolet Equinox SUVs that allegedly burned through motor oil at an excessive rate, leading to engine damage.

  1. Stacie Bryant says:

I drive a 2015 Chevy Equinox that burns through oil like crazy and nobody knows where the oil is going or why. It’s to the point that I check my oil weekly to make sure I don’t damage my engine.

  2. Casandra L Adams says:

My 2019 1.5 liter Equinox Premier uses excessive oil as well.

  3. Geneva Stroud says:

I have a 2014 Equinox that is going through oil like crazy. They say oil loss is continuing and they don’t know where. I’ve had this vehicle looked a bunch of times because of how it acts and they say it’s due to the oil loss. I’m loss for words. It needs fixed before some Bad really happens. Evansville Indiana

  4. Tim Schuette says:

The engine on my 2016 GMC Terrain just blew due to low oil level at 80,000 miles. I was at 3,000 miles from my last oil change and the oil light was not on.

  5. Dennis Schaefer says:

I purchased a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox LT with a 2.4L engine and 192,000 miles. Within the first 6 months I noticed the vehicle was requiring oil added because of low levels. I am averaging over 4 quarts of oil to refill since I bought the vehicle.

    Hello
My 2017 Equinox that I purchased May 2023 2.4 liter is no longer working. The timing belt jumped because of the oil consumption . dealer quoted $8,000.00 in repairs. Please help

  7. Eleanor says:

I purchased a used 2015 Chevy Equinox in May 2021 from a local dealership, Livonia Chrysler Jeep. The following day while driving, the vehicle stalled a few times. I called the dealership and immediately drove there to have it checked out. The Manager who sold me the vehicle told me that there was nothing he could do, refused to take the vehicle back, but that they would look at it and drive it. They indicated to me that they could not find anything wrong … LIE !! He failed to disclose the information to me as a consumer & purchaser, regarding the KNOWN problems of these vehicles. I’ve had stalling issues EVERY day since the purchase, as well as regular oil changes. I have NEVER been told that I was low on oil, or to get more frequent oil changes. In talking with numerous car shops and doing research, I have learned just how bad the vehicle is with oil consumption & engine problems, among many others due to defects KNOWN to GM. I recently came across the Class Action Lawsuit in Missouri against GM and am currently checking into that. On Thursday April 11, 2024, my car failed to accelerate while driving on the freeway. I immediately exited and when I came to the stop sign at the end of the exit, my car died & would not start. I’m being told by the car shop that I need a new engine & have been quoted $ 11,400.00. I have been in contact with Consumers Affairs, as well as GM. So far it’s been a nightmare to say the very least !!!!!

Good Luck to everyone, I hope that you are able to get it resolved in some form or another !!
