GM engines class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Rachel Buchholz filed a class action lawsuit against General Motors LLC.
  • Why: Buchholz claims GM knowingly sold model year 2014-2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles allegedly equipped with defective 2.4-liter engines.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Missouri federal court.

General Motors sold and leased certain Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles containing defective 2.4-liter engines that are unable to properly utilize their engine oil, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Rachel Buchholz claims GM knew when selling the vehicles that the 2.4-liter engines contained a defect that allegedly caused them to improperly burn off and/or “consume abnormally high amounts of oil.”

Buchholz argues the 2.4-liter engines contain piston and piston ring assemblies that were faultily designed and low-tension oil rings—installed by GM—that allegedly do not “maintain sufficient tension to keep oil in the crank case.”

“The Oil Consumption Defect is a substantial safety concern because it causes excessive oil consumption that cannot be reasonably anticipated or predicted, and causes the engine to run while dangerously low on engine oil,” states the GM class action.

Buchholz wants to represent a Missouri class of current and former owners or lessees of a model year 2014-2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles equipped with a 2.4-liter engine.

Alleged GM engine defect puts Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain vehicle owners in danger, says class action

Consumers who own a Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain vehicle with the allegedly defective 2.4-liter engine are in danger of engine fire, unexpected engine shutdowns, vehicle jerking, and unexpected loss of power, among other things, the GM class action alleges.

“The Oil Consumption Defect is unreasonably dangerous because it can cause engine failure while the Class Vehicles are in operation at any time and under any driving conditions or speeds,” states the GM class action.

Buchholz claims GM is in violation of the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act. She is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory relief along with an award of compensatory, actual, and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

A separate class action lawsuit was filed against GM in 2019 by a consumer arguing the automaker sold Chevrolet Equinox SUVs that allegedly burned through motor oil at an excessive rate, leading to engine damage.

My son has a 2017 Equinox with the 2.4L engine. The engine lost power and the timing chain snapped and ruined the entire engine on Christmas day 2022. We are looking at $8000.00 to $10,000.00 to replace the engine but I think it is not worth it, even though he still owes $9,000.00 on it.

Dec 23,2022 suddenly in our 2014 Equinox the low oil pressure light came on and then the stop engine light came on.We managed to get it home.It had to be towed to the mechanic who looked at it and said it was not holding any oil, it just immediately leaked ouot. There was a crack in the rear gasket, pvc ‘s needed replaced along with sensors needing replaced. The mechanic said we should of had a warning come up before it got this bad.It was going to cost us over $3000 to fix the problems. So for Christmas we were without a running vehicle. We ended up having to trade in the Equinox which they gave us very little for it.

I’ve been financing my 2015 2.4 liter chevy equinox for 2 years now, had the entire head gasket replaced after only a year of owning the vehicle and I’ve had a constant issue with gas mixing with oil

  5. Kelly Thompson says:

My husband and I owned a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. On June 6, 2020 Saturday morning at 7:34 am my husband lost his life when the engine suddenly cut-off or shut down because of this defective automobile. The vehicle completely shut off and his car when straight into a tree and he was thrown to the middle of the vehicle and his chest was cut in half. Obviously, he was dead on impact and leaves behind myself and 3 children. I would definitely like to be included in this case.

  6. Jessie Joyce says:

I purchased my 2016 equinox new. At 95,000 miles I took for an oil change. I thought that the mechanic didn’t put oil back in my car. I about blew my engine 3 weeks after that oil change because my car was 5 QUARTS low. Ever since then weekly I’ve had to put 1-2 quarts of oil in my car like clockwork. Unfortunately 2month ago it had finally just had enough. At 127,000miles and $7,000 later I have a new engine in my car and still owe 7,000 on it. Piston rings.

I own a 2015 terrain and the rear engine oil seal went out of it and it cost us 1800$ to get it fixed

  8. Jeanne Carol Fannin says:

This problem actually starts before the 2014 GMC Terrain. I owned a 2013 GMC Terrain. My son was driving it and the engine locked up and he hit a tree head-on. It pushed the engine back so far that it pinned him in the car. He was in the hospital for 2 weeks and had 3 surgeries. They weren’t sure if he was going to keep his leg. Today he has 30 screws and a plate and it still has not healed that car ruined his life.

  9. Debra Moore says:

I purchased a 2013 Chevy Equinox in September 2022. It is now in the shop for the same issues written above. I am having a complete overhaul of the manifold, pcv valves, rear seals replaced, all because of the pcv valves clogging during the extremely cold weather in December. I am now in debt of over $2900. I am 62 years old and will be paying off my credit cards for a lifetime. I would like to be able to get in on this law suit

  10. Melanie O'Brien says:

I purchased a 2012 chevy equinox back in cotober of 2022. I’ve had nothing but problems out of that vehicle since I have had it in my possession. I have a faulty engine. Check engine light will randomly come on, sometimes it will flash and sometimes it won’t. I had to have spark plugs and mutilated other things replaced within 3 weeks of me having it. Service stabilitrak light always came on before it went to the shop, well that never went away. That still pops up randomly to this day. It says it’s a backfire of the engine. Now it says an o2 sensor needs to be replaced. Idk what is wrong with the darn thing! Im at a loss! Someone help!!!

    1. Taylor says:

I also have a 2012. My check engine light came on and it was also a sensor. I continue to drive it for 4 months. Next thing I know timing belt slips breaks my cylinder. Now I need a knew engine. Get rid of your car now!
