A Ford driver is suing the automaker alleging at least five Ford models are equipped with defective 10-speed transmissions.
Plaintiff Daniel McCabe recently filed the class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Co. in a Massachusetts federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.
According to the lawsuit, at least five models of Ford vehicles are equipped with 10-speed transmissions that cause the vehicles to jerk, shift harshly, lunge, clunk and hesitate between gears, Car Complaints reports.
The lawsuit also alleges the 10R80 transmissions can cause a sudden loss of power in 2017-2023 models of Ford Expedition, Ford Mustang, Ford Ranger, Ford F-150 and Lincoln Navigator.
McCabe is looking to represent anyone in the United States who formerly or currently own or leased one or more of these vehicles with a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission.
McCabe said he leased a 2019 Ford Ranger with a 10R80 10-speed transmission in 2019. About seven months after he leased the Ranger, the 10R80 10-speed transmission started jerking and “held gears much longer than it should,” he alleges.
Ford has refused to recall the defective transmissions, lawsuit alleges
The class action lawsuit alleges Ford knew or should have known the transmissions contain defects.
McCabe says Ford failed to warn owners and lessees about the allegedly defective 10R80 transmissions, and now those vehicles are worth less than they should be.
“Because of the Defect, the Class Vehicles are likely to suffer serious damages and potentially catch fire if accidents occur, and there is an unreasonable and extreme risk of serious bodily harm or death to the vehicle’s occupants and others in the vicinity.”
The plaintiff seeks certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.
In March, Ford asked a federal judge in Michigan to dismiss a class action lawsuit revolving around claims it sold vehicles with an alleged defect that can cause them to roll away unexpectedly.
In 2022, Ford Motor Co. dealt with class action lawsuits, a class action settlement, a recall, a price hike, supply chain woes and a lawsuit of its own. Click here for more details.

Call me
I have a 2020 Ford F-250 with a 10 speed transmission and had all the problems described in this article..The local Ford dealer had the wehicle for almost 30 days and ended up rebuilding the transmission. When asked if they would extend the warrantee there response was to extend it 100 days.
I had a 2017 Ford F150 Raptor, which had to have the transmission replaced due to hard shifting and clunking going in and out of 3rd gear and also 8 and 9. After Ford replaced the transmission, the second transmission began doing the same thing after 3 months. The vehicle was under warranty and there were no associated costs other than it took over 6 weeks due to supply chain issues. Ford paid for a rental car and loaner during that time. Rather than deal with another (second) transmission replacement, I traded it in on a 2023 Ford Expedition Timberline which only has 20,000 miles and have started to notice beginning issues with 3rd gear again. My fear is that I’m going to have the same problem with my new Expedition. Fortunately, I have a 7yr 125000 mile warranty (which I paid for) but it still doesn’t negate the fact that there appears to be a serious problem with the transmission
We have a 2020 Ford Expedition. I have had the transmission serviced once due to the vehicle losing power while trying to pass on several occasions. Hard shifts, and shifting to soon or late has been an issue as well.
I have the 2022 Ford Ranger with the ten-speed transmission. After reading the comments, I have had the same issues, jumping (more like slamming) into gear, the transmission staying in a lower gear, and sluggish or advancing into a higher gear when doing 30 -40 mph. It my company’s vehicle and in the water district, I drive it in the Sports mode because all the roads are rural (25 -35 mph), but I still have some issues with slamming into gear and transmission staying in a lower gear.
Have a 2019 F150 with the 10R80. It’s been “rebuilt” once by the dealership and is going back again since it still shifts harshly, has delayed shifts, clunks, etc. The dealer in Fall River MA is awful. Every time I have an appointment there, it sits in the lot for three weeks until someone attempts to fix it. This isn’t what I thought I was getting into when I bought it new for $42k
I have a 2019 f150 4×4 truck. My truck has the 10 speed transmission and the 3.5L ecoboost engine. It has always seemed to hesitate during shift but i never thought much about it. The longer I’ve had it the more it has started jerking, hesitating, loss of power and shuddering upon acceleration at about 51,000 miles on the vehicle. It’s like the transmission is slipping or not engaging. This was during a time period my truck was in and out of the shop for engine issues. I showed the ford garage videos of my truck while driving showing the shuddering with the check engine light and wrench on the dash light flashing. They ignored the videos. Once again this was during a time they were looking into engine noise issues. They were replacing timing components on the engine multiple times and ford finally replaced the engine at around 62000 miles. Fast forward to here recently and the jerking and hesitation is still present and has gotten drastically worse. Today, while on the interstate, it almost caused me to get rear ended by a semi truck. It’s like the transmission isn’t pulling when it starts this shuddering and gear shifting, with multiple clunks and jerks. With that being said i began reading and searching in the internet. Surprised at what I’ve found, many vehicles seem to have the same issue and i found where lawsuits are happening bc of this issue. The truck has 65000 miles but these issues have been present the life of the truck.
I own a 2019 ford expedition and have been experiencing jerking, power loss, system failure codes, inability to access modes on transmission etc for several months. It usually occurs going in 7 or 8 shift mode. Yesterday it left me on the side of the road due to it went into neutral going 70 mph a red wrench came on the dash and several boxes of warnings flashed fast on the dash. The Trans temp never was over 210 during this event. My vehicle only has 77k on it currently. Thank you Ford :-(((
I have a 2019 F150 with a defective 10 speed transmission. It is at a Ford dealership right now in need of a new transmission. I complained of the issues while it was still under warranty and nothing was done but a note was made in my service history. Now the Ford Motor Co. is not willing to assist me with the costly repairs after my warranty has expired
I have a 2017 Ford F150 XLT Ecoboost . Took my vehicle in for 100,000 mile service. Informed them that the vehicle power train warning signal came on. They did not inform me of the TSB bulletins on the transmission issue. Manager told me to take the vechicle to a transmission shop since they were backed up with vehicles that had transmission issues. Went to Youtube to get information on powertrain warning and saw lawsuit pending on the same transmission issue I was having with my F150. I am going to take my vehicle back to the Dealership to get it documented that I am experiencing the same transmission problems. Transmission slipping / jerking. Can not afford a new vehicle so will have to get the transmission repaired.
