A Ford driver is suing the automaker alleging at least five Ford models are equipped with defective 10-speed transmissions.

Plaintiff Daniel McCabe recently filed the class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Co. in a Massachusetts federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the lawsuit, at least five models of Ford vehicles are equipped with 10-speed transmissions that cause the vehicles to jerk, shift harshly, lunge, clunk and hesitate between gears, Car Complaints reports.

The lawsuit also alleges the 10R80 transmissions can cause a sudden loss of power in 2017-2023 models of Ford Expedition, Ford Mustang, Ford Ranger, Ford F-150 and Lincoln Navigator.

McCabe is looking to represent anyone in the United States who formerly or currently own or leased one or more of these vehicles with a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission.

McCabe said he leased a 2019 Ford Ranger with a 10R80 10-speed transmission in 2019. About seven months after he leased the Ranger, the 10R80 10-speed transmission started jerking and “held gears much longer than it should,” he alleges.

Ford has refused to recall the defective transmissions, lawsuit alleges

The class action lawsuit alleges Ford knew or should have known the transmissions contain defects.

McCabe says Ford failed to warn owners and lessees about the allegedly defective 10R80 transmissions, and now those vehicles are worth less than they should be.

“Because of the Defect, the Class Vehicles are likely to suffer serious damages and potentially catch fire if accidents occur, and there is an unreasonable and extreme risk of serious bodily harm or death to the vehicle’s occupants and others in the vicinity.”

The plaintiff seeks certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

In March, Ford asked a federal judge in Michigan to dismiss a class action lawsuit revolving around claims it sold vehicles with an alleged defect that can cause them to roll away unexpectedly.

In 2022, Ford Motor Co. dealt with class action lawsuits, a class action settlement, a recall, a price hike, supply chain woes and a lawsuit of its own. Click here for more details.

  1. Jeffrey Ribbing says:

My F-150 is a 2019 with the Ecoboost 3.5 engine and the V10 transmission. Just the other day it started doing the same thing as everyone else is complaining about. I just scheduled my first service appointment for this today and I take it in on 11/08/2023. I gotta wonder what the dealership will have to say and how much it’s going to cost me to fix. Thank god I bought the aftermarket warranty when I purchased the truck, but from what I’ve been reading, even a new transmission has the same faults?

  2. Rhonda Gordon says:

I am currently in the process of having to replace a second 10-speed transmission in my fleet of 2020 Ford F550 tow trucks. The first transmission was replaced with only 80,000 miles in March 2023. The truck that I am currently having to replace the transmission on only has 90,000 miles. It is not covered under warranty and Ford is not willing to help with ANY cost. In fact, there is an increase of $400 on the transmission to get it expedited. I just recently had the engine replaced in this same truck in August 2023. Ford is robbing it’s consumers with these transmissions the same way that it robbed them with the 6.0 engines.

  3. Matt Caffrey says:

I was just informed by the dealer that my 2019 Ford Ranger XLT with only 75,000 miles on it needs a new transmission. Ford has issued a Technical Bulletin, so they are aware of the issue, but the fix is still $6,000. I’d love to get in on this law suit.

  4. Kristin Perlin says:

My husband took in his 2019 ford f150 on August 8th for an oil change and to address concerns about his ten speed transmission that felt as though it was skipping gears when we drove it. It is now August 25 and we still do not have the truck back. We literally had to go to the dealership to get communication. Now we need an overhaul! This is just out of warranty and we are still making payments on it. We are both disappointed with how this has been handled and the cost of being a vehicle short for so long, but also that Ford would allow its customers to put their lives at risk. We want compensation.

2018 F150 5.0 xlt. 53,000 miles. Transmission overheats and blows out fluid if driving at freeway speeds for too long. Also redlines before shifting if acceleration is too quick. Dealership inspection and personal mechanic said everything appears normal. Concerned about excessive resale value depreciation.

  6. Andy Herrington says:

I’m having the same issues with my 2018 f150 sport , I’ve taken my truck to ford several times all they can tell me is that it’s normal. Now I’m out of warranty .

    1. Jc Lambert says:

Several issues with transmission jerking struggling and several problems here and there

  7. Samuel M. Candelaria says:

I have a 2018 Ford F150 super-crew Lariat with 62000 miles that was purchased used in 2020. The warranty expired in November 2022 and of course its over the 60000 mile range.
Two months ago I began having issues with the transmisstion. The vehicle had a harsh and jerky transfer of gears especially from a stop. The vehcile would often loose power and then jerk inyo gear, etc…. I took it to several repair locations who all had the same anaylsis that it needed transmission work. The last repair shop, transmission repair shop, informed me of the ongoing transmission issues with this series of Ford trucks and the class action lawsuit that is ongoing. They recommended taking it back to the Ford Dealership I purchsed it from for service. I took my truck to the Ford dealership service department and after analysis was informed I needed a new transmission becuase of metal shards that were indentified in the crank case. I was advised by the service representative that this series of Ford trucks were experiencing issues with the transmission but that Ford Co. had not developed any plan or recall to address the issue. Because of the class action lawsuits that are ongoing I was told I could possibly get reimbursed for my out of pocket expenses for the transmission repair, $8600.00.

    1. Kasey Amos says:

I’m in the same boat with my 2018. I have 80k miles and now needing a new transmission. Have you got any answers

  8. Kristen Landry says:

My husband’s 2020 Ford F550 has been having transmission issues since May 2023 at around 55k miles. Ford was supposed to schedule it to be looked at when it came in for an oil change. Due to my husband using the vehicle for work and missing that appointment, Ford never scheduled the transmission to be fixed and is now claiming it’s out of warranty at 63k miles. We would like to join the suit.

  9. John says:

I just replaced my transmission in my 2017 f150 fx4. My f150 only had 111200 miles when I took my f150 back to ford for a recall in March and when I got it back my truck was not shifting properly. Took it back two times for the same reason and was told it was a programming issue. After the truck wouldn’t shift I properly and the 10 numbers disappeared I was told I needed a 11000.00 new transmission. Ford had my truck for almost 3 weeks to do repair.

  10. Joel says:

I have a 2018 F-150 XLT 5.0L and have had all of these issues. I took it to Ford in April after trying numerous remedies myself and was told I needed a whole transmission replacement and that I was one month out of warranty which I obviously sorely regret. I had had no issues the prior November when I took the truck in for routine service, so the whole thing went from non-existent to destroyed in 4 months. I paid over $8,000 out of pocket and have been looking into how to join one of these class action suits to recoup some of my money. My advice is to take it to Ford ASAP and get it documented because that is one thing they held against me when deciding not to cover the repair.

    1. Michele Hawker says:

I bought my 2017 F150 lariat brand new. I am on my 3rd transmission. It too has jerky shifting, Slip out of gear and into neutral, loss of power then slam into gear etc. 3 transmissions have all done the exact same thing. The third one is now failing 6 months after it was replaced. Thank God I bought the ford extended warranty or this would have ruined me financially. The truck is now not worth anywhere near what it should be. I want to sell it and can’t. Ford should compensate us for all this. I want in on these lawsuits.
