Top Class Actions viewers are reporting that they have received settlement checks worth as much as $105 from the Moeller vs American Media class action lawsuit.
The Moeller vs American Media class action alleged that publishers American Media Inc. and Odyssey Magazine Publishing Group Inc. disclosed Michigan customers’ magazine subscription information to third party advertisers without permission.
American Media Inc. and Odyssey Magazine Publishing Group Inc. produce a number of magazines, from Country Weekly to Men’s Fitness, and Soap Opera Digest.
The defendants agreed to end the class action lawsuit in 2017 by paying more than 400,000 Class Members awards estimated to be approximately $100 each.
Class Members included those with a Michigan street address who, between April 14, 2010 and July 31, 2016, subscribed to one of the following American Media or Odyssey Magazine publications:
- Country Weekly
- Men’s Fitness
- Muscle & Fitness
- Fit Pregnancy
- Flex
- Muscle & Fitness Hers
- Natural Health
- National Examiner
- Shape
- Star
- OK!
- Radar
- Soap Opera Digest
- National Enquirer
- Globe
The deadline to file a claim in the Michigan American Media Magazine class action lawsuit was Oct. 21, 2017. The class action settlement was granted final approval on Sept. 28, 2017. As a part of the final agreement, the publishers were permitted to fund the settlement over the course of two years in three installment payments.
According to the Top Class Actions Facebook page, Class Members who filed valid claims for the Moeller vs American Media class action settlement began receiving checks for as much as $105 starting in late October. If you filed a valid claim for this settlement, keep your eye on your mailbox because checks are arriving.
Moeller vs American Media Alleges Violations of Michigan Privacy Law
The complaint alleged that American Media or Odyssey Magazine violated Michigan privacy laws, specifically the Preservation of Personal Privacy Act. According to the plaintiff, the publishers sold information about subscribers to third parties.
Michigan residents, argued the class action lawsuit, are protected from such disclosures under state law. Under the law, businesses are not allowed to “knowingly disclose to any person, other than the customer, a record or information that personally identifies the customer as having purchased, leased, rented, or borrowed those materials from [the business].”
