The maker of Cyberpunk 2077 and Witcher has reportedly been the victim of a ransomware attack that exposed source code and other data.
On Monday, Polish video game company CD Projekt disclosed that it was hacked, according to The Verge. Reportedly, cybercriminals accessed the company’s internal network, including source code for the video games Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, and Gwent. In addition, the company said internal financial, legal and human resource documents were compromised.
The hackers have reportedly threatened to disclose the source code and encrypt CD Projekt’s devices if the company does not give in to its demands. For its part, the company says it will not submit to the Cyberpunk ransomware attack and that it has restored its infrastructure and data from its backups.
CD Projekt reportedly claims that no personal data of players or other users were compromised in the data breach. Though this is not yet a class action lawsuit, TCA will monitor this story for developments related to consumer protection.
The Cyberpunk ransomware attack comes on the heels of business and legal troubles for the video game maker who saw its much-anticipated game fail to launch during the 2020 holiday season.
Cyberpunk Legal Troubles
In addition to the recent hack issues, CD Projekt faces a Cyberpunk class action lawsuit brought by investors who say that the company misrepresented the status of the featured game.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a role-playing game set in a dystopian city filled with crime. Gamers play an outlaw hunting for an implant that can make a person immortal. After months of pushing back the release date, the Cyberpunk 2077 game faced a slew of negative user reviews and criticism after it was put on the market in December.
Consumers complained the game’s graphics requirements were too much for older consoles, reporting problems such as freezes and textures not loading quickly.
The company, along with distributor Sony, pulled the game shortly after and offered refunds. As a result, CD Projekt’s shares fell 20%, with the company losing about $1.4 billion in market value since the Cyberpunk 2077 game’s release, according to CNBC.
The Cyberpunk 2077 class action lawsuit says the company “disseminated or approved the false statements” about the status of the Cyberpunk 2077 game and used “devices, schemes and artifices to defraud.”
In addition, the company has reportedly faced criticism for forcing employees to work long hours to prepare for the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, despite representations otherwise. Employees said that they were forced to work six days a week even though the co-founder promised little to no “crunch” before the release, according to The Verge.
