Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced it is pulling the Cyberpunk 2077 game after widespread criticism about the game’s performance.
The company, which owns PlayStation, announced Thursday it would offer refunds to anyone who purchased the game and would remove it from its online store, according to The New York Times.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a role-playing game set in a dystopian city filled with crime. Gamers play an outlaw hunting for an implant that can make a person immortal. Keanu Reeves voices one of the characters.
The Cyberpunk 2077 game had faced negative user reviews and criticism since its Dec. 10 release.
“SIE strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, therefore we will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store,” Sony said on the game’s refund website. “SIE will also be removing Cyberpunk 2077 from PlayStation Store until further notice.”
The company said once it confirms a user actually purchased the Cyberpunk 2077 game via the PlayStation Store, it would process the refund.
“Please note that completion of the refund may vary based on your payment method and financial institution.”
Pulling Cyberpunk 2077 means a lot of refunds. According to The New York Times, game developer CD Projekt Red said it had received 8 million pre-orders for the $59.99 game.
“Following our discussion with PlayStation, a decision was made to temporarily suspend digital distribution of Cyberpunk 2077 on PlayStation Store,” the developer said in a statement via Twitter.
CD Projekt Red said physical copies of the Cyberpunk 2077 game could still be purchased online and in brick-and-mortar stores, adding that all copies — physical or digital — would “continue to receive support and updates.”
CD Projekt Red’s shares fell 20% Friday, with the company losing about $1.4 billion in market value since the Cyberpunk 2077 game’s release, according to CNBC.
The game’s graphics requirements are proving to be too much for older consoles. Consumers playing on PS4 or Xbox One have reported freezes, textures taking a long time to load and blurry faces on non-player characters, CNBC reported.
CD Projekt Red, based in Warsaw, apologized earlier this week for not showing gameplay on base models of previous-generation consoles before the game’s release, denying gamers the opportunity to make a more informed purchase, The New York Times reported.
Complaints about the Cyberpunk 2077 game began shortly after its release, with players using social media to report error messages and performance problems.
The Cyberpunk 2077 game had been delayed several times, according to CNBC. The game initially was set for release April 16, but was delayed to Sept. 17, then Nov. 19, then Dec. 10.
In addition to the complaints about technical glitches, the game also reportedly included a scene that could trigger people with epilepsy. CD Projekt Red patched the game to reduce that risk for epilepsy patients.
A round of updates is expected in the next week, with larger patches expected in January and February, CD Projekt Red said.
“It’s not an easy call, but they have made the right move,” Steve Bailey told CNBC. Bailey is a principal games analyst at technology research firm Omdia. “This title has been removed out of fear of not just consumer upset with a game’s quality, but potential damage to the console brand.”
Bailey doesn’t expect the botched launch to damage CD Projekt Red’s relationship with Sony.
“But they may require that they get to work more closely with [CD Projekt Red] in future,” he said.
