The majority of IT security professionals working for U.S. organizations that suffered a data breach in the past 12 months were told not to disclose them, despite their obligation to, according to the Bitdefender 2023 Cybersecurity Assessment report.
Among 400 surveyed IT and security professionals around the world, more than 40% said they were told not to disclose a data breach that occurred within the last 12 months, an amount that jumped to 71% for respondents in the U.S.
Additionally, 52% of respondents said their organizations had experienced a data breach within the last year, including 75% of respondents in the U.S., where data breaches cost $4.35 million on average, according to the data breach report.
Nearly every cybersecurity professional surveyed said they were concerned about the evolving tactics used by bad actors to conduct cyber attacks, meanwhile, with 72% of businesses saying they had witnessed phishing attacks that were increasingly sophisticated.
Being able to extend cybersecurity across multiple environments biggest challenge for security teams, report says
In total, 43% of respondents said being able to extend their cybersecurity capabilities across multiple environments is the biggest challenge they currently face, according to the Bitdefender report.
“Today’s security teams must have a holistic view of their infrastructure (on premises, virtual, cloud) and ability to investigate and verify incidents faster, eliminating threats wherever and whenever they arise,” Bitdefender’s director of product management Daniel Daraban said in a statement.
Other challenges security professionals and businesses are facing include minimized budgets and hiring difficulties as a result of struggles in the economy, and being strained by having too many vendors, data sources and tools, according to the report.
Despite the economic struggles, 78% of respondents in the U.S. said they plan to increase their security budgets this year, while 75% of security leaders worldwide say they intend to onboard additional security vendors.
In February, the independent advisory service Network Assured released a report revealing the 10 worst states in the U.S. for data breaches in 2022. California topped the list, with the study finding three of the 10 worst data breaches in 2022 happened in the Golden State.
