DentaQuest class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Melissa King filed a class action lawsuit against DentaQuest Group Inc.
  • Why: King claims DentaQuest failed to prevent a data breach that resulted in the exposure of patients’ private information.
  • Where: The DentaQuest class action lawsuit was filed in Massachusetts federal court.

A new class action lawsuit accuses DentaQuest Group of failing to protect the sensitive personal information of thousands of consumers, leaving them vulnerable to identity theft after a cyberattack by the criminal group ShinyHunters.

Plaintiff Melissa King filed the class action lawsuit on June 4, claiming the dental benefits company stored her personal data without her knowledge or consent and failed to implement adequate security safeguards.

The complaint notes that DentaQuest manages dental and vision benefits for approximately 32 million Americans, making it one of the largest dental benefits providers in the country.

King alleges the breach exposed consumers’ names, Social Security numbers, health insurance information and dates of birth.

According to the DentaQuest class action lawsuit, ShinyHunters claimed credit for the attack around May 22, 2026, posting a demand on its dark web leak page and threatening to release all stolen data by May 27 if DentaQuest did not pay a ransom.

King argues DentaQuest continued to delay notifying victims even after ShinyHunters publicly identified the company, and that the company refused to disclose how many people were affected or how the breach occurred.

King says she began receiving spam calls and texts after the DentaQuest data breach, which she believes are a direct result of her personal information being sold on the dark web.

Lawsuit: DentaQuest collected data from third parties without consumer consent

The class action lawsuit raises the allegation that DentaQuest sourced consumer data from third parties and stored it without the affected individuals ever having a direct relationship with the company.

“DentaQuest’s breach differs from typical data breaches because it affects consumers who had no relationship with DentaQuest, never sought one and never consented to it collecting and storing their information,” the DentaQuest class action lawsuit says.

King believes DentaQuest obtained her information through Advantage Dental, where she is a current patient.

The complaint alleges DentaQuest failed to implement industry-standard cybersecurity measures, including multi-factor authentication, staff training and encryption.

The DentaQuest data breach class action lawsuit asserts claims of negligence, breach of third-party contract, unjust enrichment and invasion of privacy. It seeks injunctive relief, damages and restitution.

The DentaQuest class action seeks to represent all U.S. residents whose sensitive information was compromised in the breach.

In other recent ShinyHunters cyberattacks, home security and smart automation provider ADT is facing class action allegations that it knew customer data was vulnerable to cyberattack and failed to implement reasonable security measures.
