APlaza Home Mortgage, a San Diego-based mortgage lender, has notified customers and employees of a security incident in which an unauthorized party may have accessed their personal information.
The Plaza Home Mortgage data breach, announced on May 29, stems from an intrusion into a single employee’s computer system that occurred on or around Feb. 17.
According to the company’s substitute notice, threat actors illegally accessed Plaza’s information systems without permission.
Plaza states that its security controls detected the intrusion immediately, allowing the company to act quickly to shut down the attack and remove the unauthorized party from its systems.
Plaza Home Mortgage data breach: What may have been exposed
According to the Plaza Home Mortgage data breach notification, the personal data potentially accessed varies by individual and may not include all of the following for every person affected.
For customers, the compromised information may include names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license or other government-issued identification, and information related to mortgage loan applications and servicing.
For Plaza employees, the incident may have exposed first and last names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, usernames and passwords associated with employee accounts.
In response to the data breach, Plaza states it has implemented additional organizational, technical and administrative security measures to prevent similar incidents and better protect personal information going forward.
Affected individuals who received a notification letter are encouraged to closely monitor their financial accounts for unauthorized activity and to consider placing a fraud alert on their credit files with one or more of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax at (888) 766-0008, Experian at (888) 397-3742 or TransUnion at (800) 680-7289.
Plaza has also retained CyEx, an identity theft prevention specialist, to provide impacted customers and employees with complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
