A consumer hit password management company LastPass with a class action lawsuit after an August 2022 data breach that allegedly resulted in sensitive customer information being stolen.

A plaintiff going by the name John Doe filed the class action lawsuit against LastPass US LP on Jan. 3 in a Massachusetts federal court, alleging negligence.

According to the lawsuit, LastPass failed to exercise reasonable care in securing and safeguarding highly sensitive consumer data, which led to a “massive, months-long data breach” beginning August 2022.

The data breach impacted the highly sensitive data of potentially millions of LastPass users, the LastPass class action says.

It also resulted in the unauthorized public release and subsequent misuse of LastPass customer names, end-user names, billing addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers, IP addresses and customer vault data, the lawsuit alleges.

“With their private information now in the hands of cybercriminals looking to profit from the theft, Plaintiff’s and Class members’ private information is no longer secure and has already been fraudulently misused, causing Plaintiff and members of the Class to suffer (and continue to suffer) economic and non-economic harms, as well as a substantial and imminent risk of future economic and non-economic harms,” the LastPass data breach class action says.

Plaintiff’s Bitcoin stolen after LastPass data breach, lawsuit claims

The plaintiff says he had used LastPass since 2016 and regularly changed his passwords as per “best-practice” advice.

However, after the data breach, he says, his Bitcoin was stolen using the private keys he stored with LastPass.

“Plaintiff has suffered the damages described herein, including but not limited to, the fraudulent removal of cryptocurrency from his portfolio due to the compromise of his private information, and remains at a significant risk of additional attacks now that his private information has been stolen,” the LastPass class action claims.

The plaintiff looks to represent anyone whose personal information was exposed as a result of the LastPass data breach.

He is suing for negligence, breach of contract and unjust enrichment and is seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.
