Ferrari data breach overview:
- Who: Italian luxury sports car manufacturer Ferrari has disclosed a data breach that it said exposed some customer information.
- Why: Ferrari said it decided to disclose the data breach after the hackers behind it allegedly threatened to release the stolen data if the automaker failed to pay them a ransom.
- Where: The data breach impacts Ferrari owners nationwide.
Italian luxury sports car manufacturer Ferrari has disclosed that it suffered a data breach that the company says has led to a ransom demand by hackers who were able to access some of its IT systems.
In a letter written to its customers, Ferrari said hackers behind the data breach have threatened to leak the stolen data unless the automaker pays a ransom, something the automaker has said it will not be doing, per its company policies.
“As a policy, Ferrari will not be held to ransom as paying such demands funds criminal activity and enables threat actors to perpetuate their attacks,” the luxury automaker said, in a statement.
Ferrari, which has not revealed whether or not the data was the result of a ransomware attack or simply an extortion attempt, reassured its customers that an investigation determined no payment information had been stolen.
“Based on our investigation, no payment details and/or bank account numbers and/or other sensitive payment information, nor details of Ferrari cars owned or ordered have been stolen,” the company said, in its letter.
Ferrari says customer names, addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers stolen in data breach
Information exposed in the data breach, meanwhile, included customers’ names, addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers, according to Ferrari.
Ferrari said, in its statement, that it is working with “third party experts” to “further reinforce our systems,” while also confirming that the data breach “has had no impact on the operational functions of our company.”
“We take the confidentiality of our clients seriously and understand the significance of this incident and for this reason we have notified you promptly,” Ferrari said, in its letter to customers.
A class action lawsuit filed against Ferrari was dismissed last October by a New Jersey federal judge who sided with the automaker over claims it sold vehicles with defective motor vehicle components that allegedly impacted their ability to brake properly.
The judge determined that the consumer behind the class action lawsuit failed to demonstrate that Ferrari had a duty to disclose the alleged defect.
