Teva, Allergan opioid crisis settlements overview:

  • Who: Teva Pharmaceuticals and Allergan have agreed to settlements worth $4.25 billion and $2.37 billion, respectively.
  • Why: The pharmaceutical companies agreed to the settlements to resolve claims brought by state and local governments arguing they exacerbated the nationwide opioid epidemic.
  • Where: Nationwide.

Teva Pharmaceuticals and Allergan have agreed to pay $4.25 billion and $2.37 billion respectively, in order to resolve claims the pharmaceutical companies helped exacerbate the nationwide opioid epidemic.

The settlements ended claims brought against Teva and Allergan by state and local governments arguing the pharmaceutical companies minimized the risks of opioid addiction, reports Law360.

Teva said in a statement that it is “optimistic” that the settlement will achieve a high participation rate, “enabling us to put these cases behind us and continue to focus on the patients we serve every day.”

The Teva settlement relied on Allergan—which was acquired by biotech company AbbVie in 2020—being able to reach its own nationwide settlement, which the company announced only days before, reports Law360.

A sign-on process will now reportedly get underway for states that want to join the Teva settlement, according to the company, which acquired Allergan’s generic opioids portfolio in 2016.

Settlement resources will be allocated based on population size, other factors

Resources and funds from the settlement will be distributed based on factors including population sizes and how each community was impacted by the nationwide opioid epidemic, reports Law360.

The Teva and Allergan settlements were the latest in a wave of settlements agreed to this year by pharmaceutical companies accused of contributing to and exacerbating the nationwide opioid epidemic

The settlements, which have been agreed to by pharmaceutical companies including Walmart, CVS Pharmacy, and Walgreens, among others, collectively total nearly $11 billion in compensation.

This is no joke ruined my early years on my life these places and doctors were literally flooding the entire United States with so many different kinds of pills that kids like me with 10 or 15 bucks could afford to be addicted in just a couple months literally people here in California. We’re going to different doctors and getting prescribed narcotics picking him up at different pharmacies in moving onto the next.

I trusted my doctor I have been on opiates since I was 17years old. They have ruined my life and I have lost my family and everyone that I loved has been affected. I never should have been on opiates that young. I was on them at 17 years to my 30s by then I was completely addicted to them. Then I turned to the streets when I got kicked off. Please help me, let’s hold them responsible.
