liver damageOne of the largest class action litigation movements in the United States involves Zithromax liver injuries. Millions of Americans have been affected after taking Zithromax, so medical experts encourage patients to get themselves tested.

Zithromax-induced liver injuries have become so widespread, that patients who have no history of liver complications, may also be vulnerable to the medication’s side effect. An article about Azithromycin-induced liver injury, published in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, introduced a patient who had no previous history of liver complications, but had sustained heavy damage after ingesting Zithromax.

In this article and other studies, Zithromax has been recognized to cause both acute and chronic liver diseases in patients.  To diagnose this condition normally requires medical testing. However, doctors typically identify the condition by observing the yellowing of the eyes and skin, and other nutrition deficiencies. In this article, the patient had been diagnosed after exhibiting a variety of symptoms, including the yellow pigmentation.

The patient in question is a 69-year-old woman who developed a severe case of cholestatic hepatitis after four days of prescription Zithromax. The medication had been prescribed to treat her bronchitis. After four days of using the medication the woman had to be sent to the hospital after suffering from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, elevated liver enzyme values, itching, and jaundice.  She was soon diagnosed with severe liver injury, and was put on treatment medication.

It is not known what exactly triggers liver damage in patients, but some experts have theorized it could be a metabolic reaction. Zithromax is the most popular antibiotic prescribed in the United States, and is manufactured by Pfizer. It is prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections.  Despite its popularity, Zithromax has been indicated to cause minor liver damage such as hepatitis, as well as severe liver damage, including liver failure, liver necrosis, and other medical conditions causing death. This has led to multiple Zithromax class action lawsuit cases and dozens of personal injury lawsuits against the drug maker.

In the past several years, the FDA has released public warnings regarding Zithromax and its potential to cause liver damage.  This warning came too late to many patients, as they already begun suffering from the results. Many of these affected patients are suing Pfizer.  The charges include: negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

Overview of Zithromax Complications

Zithromax (Azithromycin) is a powerful antibiotic which is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections including ear infections, strep throat, pneumonia, typhoid, bronchitis and sinusitis.  Many medical and market experts attribute Zithromax’s success and the short time prescription requirement makes it particularly popular with parents of sick children. The required prescription period of Zithromax is five days, while the normal period is 10 days for most antibiotics.

Despite the drug’s popularity, this drug has come under fire for a variety of medical reasons including: cardiac complications, liver injuries, and severe allergic reactions.  Until recently, none of these complications had been included on Zithromax’s label.
