Zithromax Z-Pak side effects lawsuitIn the midst of ongoing concerns about Zithromax, a new concern has arisen regarding the side effects of the popular antibiotic. In a recent online publication, it was reported that out of 10,747 patients who were taking Zithromax, two patients had reported a pacemaker complication.

A survey released in March found 10,747 people reporting complications from Zithromax side effects.  This survey was conducted using various websites and the FDA to gather health data, and to uncover new potential dangers.  Among the thousands of patients who reported, two patients reported pacemaker complications.

From the patients who reported pacemaker complications, the analysts saw that they were male, over 60 years old, had an existing cardiac complication, and had also been taking another medication called Colestid.  This report is available on various health advocacy websites and the FDA Zithromax studies page. The numbers came from injury submission reports made to Pfizer, Zithromax’s manufacturing company, the FDA, and to online medicine advocacy groups from January 2004 to October 2012.

While the number of reports of pacemaker complications was low, experts state that this complication brings up another possible danger Zithromax could present. The FDA warned in 2013 that Zithromax could potentially cause disturbances in the electrical activity of the heart.  The warning indicated that some patients could experience heart attack, stroke, or sudden death with certain pre-existing heart conditions.

Zithromax is currently the most popular antibiotic in the United States, popularly prescribed to treat common to bacterial infections. Experts attribute its popularity to its short prescription requirement with only five days, instead of the standard 10. A number of Zithromax lawsuits have been filed in recent years by patients who claim the antibiotic caused dangerous complications that were not adequately disclosed.

Overview of Zithromax Complications

Zithromax (Azithromycin) is one of the world’s bestselling antibiotics, and is one of the most popular antibiotics in the United States.  It is manufactured by Pfizer and is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections including ear infections, strep throat, pneumonia, typhoid, bronchitis and sinusitis.

However, many experts state that this drug’s popularity has caused a variety of problems for the reputation of both the drug and the company.  Due to overprescribing, many patients were exposed unnecessarily to the medication, which has been blamed for some serious consequences.  Among them: Stevens Johnson Syndrome, liver failure, and cardiac complications.

Cardiac conditions patients have before ingesting Zithromax, and then develop cardiac complications include:

  • QT interval prolongation
  • Low levels of potassium or magnesium in blood
  • Slow heart rate
  • Use of certain drugs used to treat abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias
