Yaz, Yasmin DVTA new Yaz lawsuit has joined existing legal action over the Yaz/Yasmin birth control pills. Plaintiff Jasmine Evans filed the Yaz lawsuit, which alleges that the common birth control pill caused her life-threatening complications from the drug. Her lawsuit joins hundreds of others in multidistrict litigation (MDL) over allegations that Bayer failed to warn women about the increased Yaz blood clot risk over other birth control pills.

Yaz and Yasmin are two related forms of birth control pills which both contain Drospirenone, a synthetic estrogen, as their active ingredient. They belong to the fourth generation of oral birth control drugs. They block pregnancy by suppressing ovulation. All forms of hormone-based birth control carry a risk of blood clot related illnesses. However, it has been alleged that Drospirenone-based birth control pills carry a greater risk than most.

The Yaz lawsuit alleges that after taking the drug, Evans developed “severe physical and personal injuries.” While her Yaz lawsuit does not go into details, it is connected to numerous others that allege that Yaz and Yasmin caused women to develop life-threatening blood clots in their bodies.

When a blood clot forms within a person’s blood vessels, it can cause a number of different medical emergencies depending on where in the body the clot lodges. For example, if a Yaz blood clot lodges in the blood vessels supplying the brain, it can cause a stroke. In the lungs it can cause a pulmonary embolism, in the heart a heart attack and so on.

According to the Yaz lawsuit against Bayer, women as young as 17 have died from strokes while taking Yaz/Yasmin. In her Yaz lawsuit, Evans claims that she would have never used Yaz or Yasmin had she been aware of the stroke risk associated with the drug.

The Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits have taken the form of MDL or mass tort. Mass torts are a sort of group lawsuit, similar to a class action lawsuit. In both mass torts and class action lawsuits, a group of people allege that they have suffered similar harms at the hands of the same defendant. The main difference is that class action lawsuits start out as group lawsuits, while mass torts typically start as individual lawsuits that are later coordinated into a single legal action.

This is why mass torts are more common than class action lawsuits in drug lawsuits, since individuals involved in drug lawsuits tend tend to have injuries that vary in degree.

The Yaz lawsuit is Jasmine Evans v. Bayer Corp., et al., Case No. 3:14-cv-10307-DRH-PMF, filed within the MDL In Re: Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Relevant Products Liability Litigaiton, MDL No. 2100, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Illinois.
