Volkswagen initiated a recall for 47,651 model year 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta vehicles over concerns they are equipped with an engine switch that can fail, particularly during high temperatures.
The recall includes certain 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta vehicles equipped with a conventional ignition switch, according to a recall letter Volkswagen sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).Â
The letter says Volkswagen is concerned an ignition switch failure could cause the recalled Jetta vehicles’ electrical system to shut down and the engine to stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.Â
Volkswagen to replace ignition switch on recalled Jetta vehicles free of charge
The automaker says it plans to remedy the issue by having its dealers replace the ignition switch on the recalled Volkswagen Jetta vehicles free of charge.Â
Volkswagen plans to start mailing notification letters to vehicle owners Oct. 27, according to the recall letter.Â
Individuals who have more questions about the recall can contact Volkswagen directly at 800-893-5298. Vehicle owners can also contact the NHTSA at 888-327-4236 or visit its website.Â
In January, Volkwsagen and one of its subsidiaries, Audi, agreed to pay $3.5 million to resolve claims regarding a 2019-2021 data breach that exposed sensitive personal information belonging to their customers.Â
