SunRun Deceptive Marketing Class Action Lawsuit

By Matt O’Donnell

SunRun Inc.SunRun Inc. has been hit with a class action lawsuit alleging the San-Francisco-based solar energy company deceived consumers into leasing SunRun solar panels by making misleading claims about their cost savings and about the increasing costs of electricity.

Plaintiff Shaw Reed alleges in the SunRun class action lawsuit that the company misled consumers into believing they could save money on “rising electricity costs” by using SunRun solar panels despite the fact that the energy prices at Southern California Edison began dipping or plateauing after 2008.

“The central premise of SunRun’s uniform marketing campaign is that increases in electricity prices will result in cost savings by installing the SunRun Solar system,” Reed says in the SunRun class action lawsuit. “But SunRun deceptively states with certainty something that is inherently unknowable.”

Reed further alleges in the SunRun class action lawsuit that the company was operating without a business license from 2007 to February 2012. The class action lawsuit is seeking a refund on customer fees from contracts entered into before 2012.

The SunRun class action lawsuit also claims company agents misleadingly told consumers they could terminate their SunRun contracts if they move.

The SunRun class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all persons and entities in the state of California who entered into a solar power contract with SunRun prior to February 2012. It is also seeking to represent a subclass of all Class Members who were told by SunRun that they could terminate their contracts without further obligation if they moved.

The SunRun Class Action Lawsuit case is Shawn Reed v. SunRun Inc., Case No. BC498002, Superior Court of the State of California, County of Los Angeles.

  1. Sonia says:

    Good evening,
I live in Boston and have been fighting with Sunrun since March 2023 this is when the panels were placed. Sunrun was negligent because they did not bring roofers in before the panels were placed. My roof was leaking and I was told it is my responsibility they are not roofers. I was asked to get an estimate I did and they refused to pay. I asked them to removed the panels so I can fix my roof and I do not want the panels replaced. They told me I wold have to pay for 25 years of service. The only was I can not pay for is is if I sold my house or buying the system from Sunrun. I want nothing more to do with Sunrun.

  2. Debbie Mondello says:

I would like to become a part of the class action against SunRun.
We too were misled as well..they have not saved me money. I am paying more now than before..I would like to get rid of them.

  3. Chris I says:

is this class action lawsuit still on going? I signed with sunrun back in 2021 and continue to see high electric bills from Comed (in IL) and my lease fee from sunrun making this not a great option. even having no trees blocking the panels it seems I never collect enough sun to offset cost of electric daily.

  4. Sandra Rios says:

My solar panels did not work for a whole year. My electric bill is 3200 right now I’ve been calling them to help me pay this off they did give me $990 so they should be at least giving me 1700 right now and they don’t even answer. Call me back or anything now I owe PGE 2000 more than I should, my PG&E bill should only be 500 a year

  5. GEORGIA M BROWN says:

I live in texas . I now have a 300. light bill and still have to pay the 139.00 for the solar bill. I lost I would have only had one bill if i had not fooled with them. they are a rip off.

  6. Bryce Johns-Petersen says:

Sunrun called this a “No Out-of-Pocket Expense” project from day one. Then I suddenly found myself having to take out a $3,000 loan to cover one part of the project, then I had a $588 power bill due to fees that were never disclosed and while trying to get some answers, I received a text stating my account was overdo by $3,800 before my panels were even activated. I can’t pay that. Now, the company has decided to ghost me to avoid giving me any answers. I want them to pay those costs.

  7. Padre Scott says:

Good day, I too was deceived by this solar panel company(Sun Run solar panels). The sales person flat out lie to me and now I’m stressing about the mess I find myself in.

  8. Otilia C.S. says:

They refused to fix the panels and now I pay 3 time more $ than before the panels instaletion .

  9. Rebeca Santillan says:

Sunrun representative told us that we would be saving about 50% of our current electric bill if we installed their solar panels but instead they are now charging us twice as much of what they promised we would pay every month. The contract they have from us never had the monthly amount.

  10. Thomas Dieck says:

In Florida, they sold a 25 year lease to our aunt who was 93 years old at the time and mostly blind. They promised her a $400 a month savings, when in fact, her total cost for electricity increased a few bucks. When she tried to sell her house, they refused to extend the Fair Market Value buy-out promised by their contract. And the fine print? Their performance guarantee was “zeroed out”. Anyone want to do a class action suit in Florida?
