Legacy Snack Solutions is recalling specific batches of Giant Eagle Baked Pita Chips with Parmesan, Garlic and Herb due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall affects products distributed in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia and Indiana.
The recall, announced on May 7, involves chips packaged in 7.33-ounce black bags featuring the Giant Eagle logo. These pita chips carry the UPC “0 3003496507 5” and a best-by date of July 16, 2026.
The potential contamination stems from milk powder supplied by California Dairies Inc., which was used in the seasoning blend for the chips. Although routine testing of the seasoning batches showed negative results for Salmonella, the Giant Eagle recall was issued as a precautionary measure.
Pita chips test negative, but Legacy Snack Solutions urges caution
Despite the absence of reported illnesses linked to the pita chips, consumers are advised to avoid consuming the product.
“The affected seasoning batches tested negative for Salmonella prior to use; however, out of an abundance of caution, the product referenced is being recalled,” the Giant Eagle recall notice says.
Salmonella poses significant health risks, particularly to young children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of infection include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In severe cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream, leading to more serious conditions, such as arterial infections and endocarditis.
Legacy Snack Solutions is committed to consumer safety and is working closely with the FDA to manage the Giant Eagle recall process.
Customers who have purchased the affected pita chips can obtain a refund or replacement by photographing the product’s bar code and best-by date before disposal. They can then return to the store of purchase with their receipt or contact Legacy Snack Solutions by email at [email protected] or by calling 1-800-532-6120 for a credit.
Legacy Snack Solutions says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the Giant Eagle recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
