Risperdal side effectsA new Risperdal gynecomastia study has identified a link between the drug and this embarrassing medical condition.

This recent Risperdal gynecomastia study has found a statistical significance in the risk male patents face with gynecomastia when prescribed Risperdal.

This study also supports similar findings of other investigations, including a study conducted last year indicating that older men were also at risk of gynecomastia when prescribed Risperdal.

Scientists point out that this is highly concerning, as male breast growth typically only occurs in adolescent or other younger-aged patients who are going through puberty and hormone fluctuations.

This Risperdal study was conducted by the researchers of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and had examined a database of over 400,000 men between the ages of 15 and 25.

The scientists found that current Risperdal patients, including male children and adolescents, were five times more likely to develop gynecomastia than the control group.

The findings were published in the August 2015 online edition of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, with a previous stating that elderly men taking Risperdal had a 69 percent greater likelihood of developing Risperdal gynecomastia.

This study conducted last year, was also conducted at the University of British Columbia, which had examined the data of one million men in the United States; these findings were presented at the 2014 Annual Meeting for the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry.

Overview of Risperdal Gynecomastia Complications

As previously stated, Risperdal is a very popular antipsychotic medication that was originally approved by the FDA in 1993 to treat adults with extreme mental disorders like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

It is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and has been praised for its efficiency and lack of mental side effects.

Risperdal works by channeling one specific brain chemical called dopamine, which controls the brain’s pleasure and reward sensors. Unfortunately, there have been a number of complaints indicating that the drug’s treatment mechanisms triggers a rather devastating side effect for male patients known as gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition in which unnatural breast growth occurs in human males, typically due to a severe hormone imbalance; it is most commonly seen in young boys entering or going through puberty.

Experts explain that this is due to the fact that Risperdal is a natural prolactin increaser, which is the hormone that is responsible for breast growth in young women. While males do naturally produce this hormone, it is in miniscule amounts and should not exhibit the same growth as their female counterparts.

Despite this vital drug safety information, this information was allegedly omitted from Risperdal’s warning label when Janssen reportedly knew of this possible side effect.

Legal experts state that Janssen and its parent company pushed to have Risperdal officially approved to treat children by the FDA, once they saw how popular it was for that specific off-label purpose.

Risperdal was eventually approved to treat children in 2006. However, even before the drug’s FDA approval, Jansen had been reportedly aggressively advertising Risperdal for pediatric use.

There are currently over 1,400 Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuits coordinated into the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania. With this recent study confirming suspicions, legal experts are expecting many more claims to be filed in the near future.
