A New York couple has field a Pradaxa lawsuit against Boehringer Ingelheim International Inc. alleging that the blood thinner lead to life threatening bleeding and that the company was negligent in warning patients of Pradaxa hemorrhage side effects.
According to the Pradaxa internal bleeding lawsuit, the plaintiff John Turner began taking the medication in December 2010. Roughly six months later, in May 2011, he “was caused to suffer from life threatening bleeding.”
Mr. Turner filed this Pradaxa lawsuit against Boehringer along with his wife, Brenda Turner.
Study documents noted that “[t]here was a significantly higher rate of major life threatening bleeding with dabigatran (the chemical name for Pradaxa) at the 150-mg dose than with warfarin.” The latter was the main blood thinner prescribed by doctors and has been used for decades. However, Boehringer Ingelheim promoted its product as easier to use, with fewer restrictions necessary and no need for ongoing testing of blood serum levels.
However, one of the problems with Pradaxa is that Boehringer did not make an antidote to be used in the event of uncontrolled bleeding.
Not only that, but the couple’s Pradaxa lawsuit notes that “until the belated date of Jan. 17, 2012, the U.S. label did not contain a warning regarding the lack of antidote, but instead only mentioned this important fact in the overdosage section.”
As a result, hundreds of patients have died from Pradaxa hemorrhage side effects because it is difficult for doctors to stop the bleeding without such an antidote.
Another key issue raised by the couple’s Pradaxa lawsuit is the lack of flexibility regarding dosage. There are two approved options available to doctors, and little testing has been done based on body weight or other factors that could increase blood serum levels. The complaint also cites concerns about the increased risk of bleeding events in older Americans who need treatment for preventing the risk of stroke.
The Pradaxa internal bleeding lawsuit is John Turner et al v. Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. et al, Case No. 14-cv-50378 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
