Nissan recalls 700K+ Rogues due to potential engine shutoff

Nissan Rogue recall overview: 

• Who: Nissan North America has initiated a recall for more than 700,000 of its Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles. 
• Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the vehicles were equipped with a defective jackknife key that can cause a driver to unintentionally turn off the vehicle while it is in use.
• Where: Nationwide.

Nissan North America has issued a recall of more than 700,000 of its Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles over concerns they were equipped with defective jackknife keys that could cause a driver to inadvertently turn off their vehicle while in use. 

The recall affects 2017-2022 Nissan Rogue Sport and 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue vehicles with a “S” Grade trim level and equipped with a jackknife key, according to a recall published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Feb. 16. 

The automaker said its Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles produced after the model years included in the recall are not affected since the jackknife key was no longer manufactured, with the company switching to an Intelligent Key. 

The automaker said the jackknife keys responsible for the recall may not be able to hold its keyblade in an extended “open” position and that, over time, the key fob “could unlock and rotate downwards.” 

“If the vehicle is driven with the key in the collapsed position, contact with the key fob by the driver could inadvertently turn the vehicle off while driving, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Nissan recall states. 

Nissan advising affected Rogue owners to avoid attaching accessories to key fob

Nissan said it is preparing to remedy the problem and, in the meantime, said it will notify impacted vehicle owners to “avoid attaching accessories to the key fob” and to use the key in its “non-folding orientation.” 

The automaker said it began notifying its dealers Feb. 17 and would begin notifying owners of all the affected vehicles by the beginning of this month. 

In December, the automaker announced it was recalling 125,215 model year 2017 Rogue compact crossover vehicles over concerns they could catch fire.
