Gynecomastia is a startling disorder that causes men to grow breasts. The disorder goes by many common names, including male breast growth and “man boobs.” Unfortunately, many people have no idea what causes this disorder, beyond the fact that it relates to abnormal levels of certain hormones. In fact, roughly a quarter of cases have no discernable cause. However, some cases may be linked to certain medications, including Risperdal.
Risperdal is the trade name of an atypical antipsychotic, technically known as risperidone. This drug is used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and some of the symptoms associated with autism. The name “atypical antipsychotic” means that it does not work in the same manner of earlier-generation antipsychotics, which tended to go hand-in-hand with a number of side effects, including debilitating muscle tremors. However, Risperdal has been linked to an increased risk of gynecomastia.
According to a peer-reviewed study that was published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacologyin 2006, “studies performed in adult patients unambiguously demonstrate a marked effect of risperidone on prolactin blood levels, with possible clinical effects related to hyperprolactinemia, such as gynecomastia and galactorrhea.” This means that the drug was found to increase many of the hormones associated with male breast growth. The report goes on to state that many of Risperdal’s side effects are not well understood, and other serious side effects may also be linked to the drug. Other studies have also suggested a link between the disorder and Risperdal.
Gynecomastia can be corrected with surgical intervention. Additionally, many patients require psychological help to cope with the stigma associated with male breast growth, since the event may be emotionally traumatic. This trauma can be exacerbated since it often strikes during adolescence, a stressful phase of life to begin with. It can also be costly to correct the condition, between medical costs and therapy expenses.
Unfortunately, many patients with gynecomastia do not realize that their medication could have caused the condition. A class action lawsuit investigation has been launched to explore the possibility of legal action against the manufacturers of Risperdal. Such Risperdal lawsuits could allege that the manufacturers were aware of these risks, and failed to act on them in a timely manner to protect the public. The lawsuit could use studies like the one in The Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, postmarket surveillance, and clinical testing as evidence that the manufacturer knew about the risks, and failed to warn patients and health care professionals. These Risperdal lawsuits can help victims pay for medical costs and compensate them for pain and suffering.
In general, Risperdal lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.

I was prescribed Risperdal for anxiety. back in the late 1980’s . I was leaving work and a Gary Police Officer stopped me and said I ran thru 3 traffic signs. He gave me 3 traffic tickets and advised me to go home and get some sleep. I stopped taking the medication because it was to many milligrams for me . I did not like the side effects from the medicine. I had to go to traffic court and pay the tickets. I told the Judge and the City Prosecutor for the City of Gary what happened .I want my money for the tickets I had to pay and compensation for pain and suffering. I could have died if it was not for Our Loving Living God Jesus Chris had not watched over me and is keeping me..
