Hyundai Subframe Corrosion Class Action Settlement
By Matt O’Donnell

HyundaiHyundai has reached a class action lawsuit settlement over subframe corrosion in some of its vehicles. If you currently own or lease one of the following Hyundai vehicles in the United States, you may be able to receive a free inspection, repair or reimbursement from the Hyundai settlement:

2001-2003 Hyundai Elantra made from June 30, 2000 to May 26, 2003

2001-2003 Hyundai Santa Fe made from March 31, 2000 to June 3, 2003

1999-2004 Hyundai Sonata made from September 15, 1998 to November 20, 2003

2003 Hyundai Tiburon made from October 26, 2001 to May 27, 2003

2001-2004 Hyundai XG300/XG350 made from July 13, 2000 to November 20, 2003

The Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement will resolve claims that certain Hyundai vehicles suffered from severe corrosion on their front subframes and certain other suspension parts. The class action lawsuit claimed that the corrosion could cause the subframe or suspension components to fail, possibly leading to suspension failure, wheels falling off, loss of vehicle control and vehicle disablement.

While this lawsuit was going on, Hyundai started a recall and reimbursement program for these vehicles in states where large quantities of salt are used to de-ice roads during the winter months. The plaintiffs in the case, entitled Nicholas Cirulli and Robert D’Elia v. Hyundai Motor Company and Hyundai Motor America, believed Hyundai’s plan was insufficient.

The Hyundai salt corrosion class action settlement will provide certain inspection and repair or replacement services, free of charge, to certain owners and lessees for possible corrosion of certain suspension components, such as front subframes, front lower control arms and rear trailing arms. The class action settlement will also reimburse owners and lessees who paid expenses in the past for replacement of specified parts due to corrosion as long as these expenses have not already been paid by Hyundai.

To participate in the free inspection or repair program under the Hyundai corrosion settlement, you must pre-authorize the inspection via either the settlement website (saltbeltcorrosion.hyundaiusa.com) or by calling (877) 277-0012. If the court approves the settlement in April, Hyundai will begin permitting pre-authorized inspections in May 2011.

If you wish to obtain reimbursement for repairs you previously performed on your vehicle relating to the corrosion problem, you must mail your proof of repair and payment receipt along with a “model reimbursement form” found on the settlement website.

2003 xg 350 complete rust bucket !! Left rear quarter panel broke sagging to ground. Tad bit over 100k mileage. Needs to go to Scrapper !!.

  2. Rosanna says:

We have 2007 Santa Fe and was just told main frame has holes in frame and I’d undsfe. After taking to dealership Hyundai now is trying to low ball me a low buy out offer. I can’t even get into another safe suv for 5,000.

  3. Rich says:

I have a 2005 Hyundai sonata that has a rusted subframe and hyundai has denied the claim to repair it. Obviously, the corrosion problem still exisits in the 2005 models. The repair estimate from the dealer is $3000 to replace the subframe and upper and lower control arms. Where are the details to this class action lawsuit and the attorneys that went to battle with Hyundai?

  4. Micheal Tucker says:

    I purchased a 2004 Hyandai XG350 V6,
May-June 2016, and had an inspection done and it was discovered that my frame is cracked but I never knew what could be be about, who and where do I contact to have this problem resolved?

  5. David Cox says:

I am buying a 01 Hyundai sonata from a friend and almost have it paid off.. It has the same problems I have read about & am afraid to drive it because of it breaking.. I was wondering how long the recall is good for & is it available for me.. thanks David

    1. Screech says:

I just bought an ’02 Sonata off of someone and the dealership told me they’d honor the recall but after having it for 2 weeks, now they have decided they don’t want to do it because of how long the recall has been in effect and the previous owners didn’t take it in to have it checked…So I am basically being screwed over. They said there is too much rust and it isn’t safe to drive, but wouldn’t tell me what other parts supposedly needed fixed before they’d do the recall. My mechanic says there is nothing wrong but some rusted bolts and a a bit of corrosion on the exhaust flange and that’s all he could find other than the subframe being rusted through. So…don’t hold your breath. They will fight you on fixing it.

      1. mike smith says:

        Return it now!!

    2. Joseph migliorato says:

Hi I have the same problem going on with my 2001 Hyundai Sonata I wouldn’t for a front alignment at NBT tires and they told me that the subframe is completely rusted out and there is no way that they could do the alignment I called the Honda dealer today where I live in Crystal Lake Illinois they ran the VIN number and said to bring it in for an inspection and then Hyundai will replace everything that is damaged from the salt rusted out corrosion and the date is August 25th 2018 so contact your nearest Hyundai dealer

  6. Chutuo P says:

I have a 2002 and a 2003. They have changed the subframe on the 2003 as the corrosion got so back it was causing steering issues. First the mechanic thought it was the steering rack, but replacing the latter did not resolve the issue. So they replaced the subframe and I have car with a brand new subframce and steeing rack and I will drive that baby until I break even.
I’m going to try to get the 2002 replaced because our cars are all almost 20 years old so we can’t rely on only one: that is why we have pair of these. They are great cars and any mechanic is quite a ease with them.

  7. Melissa says:

The straps holding up my gas tank snapped after filling up my tank. When getting the car looked at, was told the whole sub frame is rusted and unsafe to drive. 2002 hyundai elantra. 144k miles.

  8. Heather Smith says:

I am about to have my subframe replaced as a bolt to the subframe and control arm bushing has completely rust through.

  9. A Moore says:

I have had subframe problems and currently about to replace one but I have never heard from Hyundai or anyone pertaining to this. I’ve not been contacted at all about my 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe.

  10. Bud says:

I too have just had my subframe replaced. I don’t understand why the 2004 is covered and not the 2005. Its the same car.
