Hyundai Subframe Corrosion Class Action Settlement
By Matt O’Donnell

HyundaiHyundai has reached a class action lawsuit settlement over subframe corrosion in some of its vehicles. If you currently own or lease one of the following Hyundai vehicles in the United States, you may be able to receive a free inspection, repair or reimbursement from the Hyundai settlement:

2001-2003 Hyundai Elantra made from June 30, 2000 to May 26, 2003

2001-2003 Hyundai Santa Fe made from March 31, 2000 to June 3, 2003

1999-2004 Hyundai Sonata made from September 15, 1998 to November 20, 2003

2003 Hyundai Tiburon made from October 26, 2001 to May 27, 2003

2001-2004 Hyundai XG300/XG350 made from July 13, 2000 to November 20, 2003

The Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement will resolve claims that certain Hyundai vehicles suffered from severe corrosion on their front subframes and certain other suspension parts. The class action lawsuit claimed that the corrosion could cause the subframe or suspension components to fail, possibly leading to suspension failure, wheels falling off, loss of vehicle control and vehicle disablement.

While this lawsuit was going on, Hyundai started a recall and reimbursement program for these vehicles in states where large quantities of salt are used to de-ice roads during the winter months. The plaintiffs in the case, entitled Nicholas Cirulli and Robert D’Elia v. Hyundai Motor Company and Hyundai Motor America, believed Hyundai’s plan was insufficient.

The Hyundai salt corrosion class action settlement will provide certain inspection and repair or replacement services, free of charge, to certain owners and lessees for possible corrosion of certain suspension components, such as front subframes, front lower control arms and rear trailing arms. The class action settlement will also reimburse owners and lessees who paid expenses in the past for replacement of specified parts due to corrosion as long as these expenses have not already been paid by Hyundai.

To participate in the free inspection or repair program under the Hyundai corrosion settlement, you must pre-authorize the inspection via either the settlement website (saltbeltcorrosion.hyundaiusa.com) or by calling (877) 277-0012. If the court approves the settlement in April, Hyundai will begin permitting pre-authorized inspections in May 2011.

If you wish to obtain reimbursement for repairs you previously performed on your vehicle relating to the corrosion problem, you must mail your proof of repair and payment receipt along with a “model reimbursement form” found on the settlement website.

My 2005 Hyundai Sonata has only 38,000 miles on it and I discovered today while getting an oil change that my sub frame was rotted out and in need of replacement.
I hardly use the car since bought it new and never drive it in the snow so no salt hits it.

  2. Derrick Fletcher says:

My moms 2004 gt has a rotten rear crossmember and we live in Illinois I’m unsure of its build date at this time but would love to know more about this recall considering we just found the crossmember rott yesterday and have since stopped driving it.

  3. Michael says:

    Does this include any Tucson’s?

  4. Lance says:

Took my 2005 tiburon to get the door handle replaced, was told I had rear subframe rust and was not safe to drive. The dealer told me it was recalled, gave me a number for hyundai recalls who then told me my car is not recalled…? Has anyone had success at least getting an answer on this? Way too far spread for the short range recall they did. I’ve had no real problems with my car before this!

  5. Paul Tashner says:

I have a 2005 Hyundai XG350 with only 71,200 miles on it. Took it for Virginia State Safety Inspection yesterday and they said the right side of the engine cradle is completely rusted out. Must replace the cradle or scrap the car. I’m checking on replacement of the cradle – the parts seem to be about $400 – $450 from major parts suppliers, not sure what installation will cost. Has anyone gotten help from Hyundai on this?

  6. Wayne Smith says:

I have a 2009 Sonata with 82000 miles. I took it into the Hyundai dealership because the car would go out of control when you hit a bump. They did an inspection and said nothing wad wrong. I asked them to check it again because I wad afraid to drive it. They came back and told me that the sub frame bolts were all rusted out and that the car was not safe to drive. What now I said and they just shrugged.

  7. Darrell says:

I just barely made it to my office this morning. I own a 2002 Hyundai Sonata; been noticing a slight squealing sound coming from the rear. Heard a loud noise and thud resulting in right rear passenger side tire going every which way. I was fortunate enough to make it to my office and get a picture. I was not aware of this issue with these cars. I am waiting to call Hyundai Customer care this morning to see what resolution I can get. I only have 163k miles on it.

  8. John says:

We ALSO just found the SAME issue with my 2005 Hyundai XG350 today. We had it looked at and was told the sub frame was rotted out and broken. What can we do?

  9. Michelle says:

Just fount the SAME issue with my 2005 Hyundai XG350. 105xxx miles today. I have been noticing the steering wheel getting offset from straight to go strait down the road. Had it looked at and was told the engine cradle was rotted out and broken. I was told it is totally unsafe to drive it this way.

  10. Angela says:

I have a 2005 Hyundai Sonata. Yes, just found out the subframe is rusted and cracked. This is crazy!!

I have called the 800 number was informed, my VIN is not listed under any recalls for this problem.

Wow, I really need some help with this problem, is Hyundai just waiting for people to get killed, if they haven’t already, this is not a normal maintenance problem!

I need Hyundai Corporation to fix this sub-frame now, immediately. I’m talking about my life in danger, for them it’s just another part.

    1. Angela says:

Let me know what you find out!

I have to drive this car tomorrow and I’m really nervous, I have been watching for the potholes and staying off the Highway until I can resolve this urgent matter with Hyundai.

Seems to me this subframe thing is out of control. Really there are just too many Hyundai Owners out there with the same very dangerous situation.

    2. Jack greminger says:

I have the exact same issue and the told me the same thing due to the age of the car however there is no o rust on the entire car except for this part they refuse to fix it I have no choice but to drive it and take my chances.
