Hyundai Subframe Corrosion Class Action Settlement
By Matt O’Donnell

HyundaiHyundai has reached a class action lawsuit settlement over subframe corrosion in some of its vehicles. If you currently own or lease one of the following Hyundai vehicles in the United States, you may be able to receive a free inspection, repair or reimbursement from the Hyundai settlement:

2001-2003 Hyundai Elantra made from June 30, 2000 to May 26, 2003

2001-2003 Hyundai Santa Fe made from March 31, 2000 to June 3, 2003

1999-2004 Hyundai Sonata made from September 15, 1998 to November 20, 2003

2003 Hyundai Tiburon made from October 26, 2001 to May 27, 2003

2001-2004 Hyundai XG300/XG350 made from July 13, 2000 to November 20, 2003

The Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement will resolve claims that certain Hyundai vehicles suffered from severe corrosion on their front subframes and certain other suspension parts. The class action lawsuit claimed that the corrosion could cause the subframe or suspension components to fail, possibly leading to suspension failure, wheels falling off, loss of vehicle control and vehicle disablement.

While this lawsuit was going on, Hyundai started a recall and reimbursement program for these vehicles in states where large quantities of salt are used to de-ice roads during the winter months. The plaintiffs in the case, entitled Nicholas Cirulli and Robert D’Elia v. Hyundai Motor Company and Hyundai Motor America, believed Hyundai’s plan was insufficient.

The Hyundai salt corrosion class action settlement will provide certain inspection and repair or replacement services, free of charge, to certain owners and lessees for possible corrosion of certain suspension components, such as front subframes, front lower control arms and rear trailing arms. The class action settlement will also reimburse owners and lessees who paid expenses in the past for replacement of specified parts due to corrosion as long as these expenses have not already been paid by Hyundai.

To participate in the free inspection or repair program under the Hyundai corrosion settlement, you must pre-authorize the inspection via either the settlement website (saltbeltcorrosion.hyundaiusa.com) or by calling (877) 277-0012. If the court approves the settlement in April, Hyundai will begin permitting pre-authorized inspections in May 2011.

If you wish to obtain reimbursement for repairs you previously performed on your vehicle relating to the corrosion problem, you must mail your proof of repair and payment receipt along with a “model reimbursement form” found on the settlement website.

I have a 2000 Tiburon, and yes it is old, and lots of miles. Most miles are not in a salted road area. My car has NO rust anywhere underneath the car but the Engine cradle. It still looks new sitting in my driveway. I have written Hyundai and no help from there. I do believe the manufacturing company that produced these pieces of blank should put on new ones. I love this car and it should have lasted me the rest of my old life, and now it sits in the yard, getting ready to go to a parts graveyard. I want my car, but old and can’t afford several thousand dollars for a new engine cradle. There is nothing left of mine. It is so wrong.

  4. Landon says:

Just fount the SAME issue with my 2004 Hyundai Sonata. Had it looked at and was told the engine cradle was rotted out and rust through holes in frame. I was told it is totally unsafe to drive it this way.

Has anyone received any help from Hyundai regarding your Frame Rot?

    1. Kathy Ann Roush says:

Absolutely not they say my vin number is not covered we need help from a lawyer who cares for what’s right

  8. Dawn Beckner says:

I have been waiting years for more info on this. I recieved a letter regarding my 2001 Hyundai elentra. Followed what the letter said. Ended up having to get rid of the car due to already basically repairing the front end in just couldn’t afford any more repairs. Took 10 years to hear something.

I feel your pain, I have a 2008 Azera with corrosion on the front sub frame. The same problem as a recall with the rear. Hyundai wont cover it. What is the difference if it happens on the rear as to the front? 14,000 in parts alone. ‘IM 64 years old this was going to be my last car. I am livid I had all the other recalls done and they wont cover this? What is the difference if the recall problem is on the same part as the recall just front not the rear. I’m fed up I have to go car shopping again ? thanks Hyundai. My next car which I really can’t swing is going to be a competitors.

    1. kevin sullivan says:

      Correction 1,400 for parts

      1. Ed says:

I am in the same boat. I bought a 2005 sonata less than a year ago for 4000.00 dollars. I thought it was a great deal. Car looks and runs great. I got to drive it for 6 months then tried to get it inspected but wouldn’t pass cause right side front sub frame is rusted through

  10. Joann says:

I have a 2006 Hyundai Azera. I almost lost my back drivers side wheel. It was protruding out the wheel well which usually it’s Not even seen! Good thing I realized something was wrong with my car. About a year ago I brought it to the dealer for the recall to inspect the frame for corrosion. They inspected it and sprayed the underside. Well here we are about a year later and it was towed to the mechanic almost 2 hours home and in fact it is my subframe bolts etc corroded. The mechanic told me it was hanging on by the thickness of a piece
Of paper! I called Hyundai and they said I’m over mileage. I have 121,000 miles on it. How many miles do they think I put on it since they did it? And how come there’s holes in the frame? I’m sure that didn’t happen over the year! There was an issue prior to
Them spraying! My mechanic called the dealer and was told they were told to spray it not Replace it!! Are you kidding? Never again will I take my car back to the dealer if they can put me in the drivers seat of a car that should’ve been fixed right in the first place! I had several services performed by them also. Now I’m even questioning that!! So now it’s being repaired by the mechanic which is a good 7 hour job and it’s costing me about $4000! Thanks hyundai. This so t be the last you hear from me!!
