Honda class action lawsuitThousands of Honda owners will receive free warranty extensions and refunds for repair bills caused by excessive oil consumption thanks to a 2013 class action lawsuit settlement that’s finally paying out. The average payout is between $235 and $294, according to reports.

The first wave of checks were mailed on July 14, with a second wave going out in the Fall, according the Settlement Administrator.

The money is from a class action lawsuit (Soto v. Honda Motor Co. Inc.) filed in March 2012 that accused the automaker of selling more than 1. 5 million defective vehicles that excessively burned oil. The alleged defect caused the Honda engines to misfire and forced car owners to constantly monitor oil levels, leading to expensive repair bills to fix damage caused by Honda engine oil defect.

Honda denied the allegations but agreed to provide full compensation for out-of-pocket repair expenses, plus a warranty extension to cover future repairs for covered damage that occurs within eight years of the original purchase or lease date of the vehicle.

Class Members of the Honda engine class action settlement included all current and former owners or lessees of one or more of the following Honda vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), purchased or leased in the United States:

  • 2008-2012 Honda Accord
  • 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey
  • 2009-2013 Honda Pilot
  • 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour
  • 2012 Honda Crosstour

Class Members did not have to take action to receive the warranty extension — they will automatically receive this benefit — but had to submit a valid claim form by April 10, 2014 to receive full compensation for vehicle repairs.

A California federal judge granted final approval to the Honda engine misfire settlement on March 27.

Settlement Administrator Rust Consulting said in Court documents that it received over 7,164 claims for reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses (as of March 3). Over 1.87 million current and former Honda owners were eligible to participate.

Same! Except my engine eventually seized unexpectedly on the highway and my son and I were nearly killed. Now they say, sorry, since there is no record of repairs (they would not take action) during hte warranty and the extended warranty (which I did not know about) is expired.

No recall? Engines seizing on the highway?! This is life threatening for everyone in or near a Honda with the original VCM engine system with unaddressed issues. Honda knows. Honda does not care.

My husband took it In For an oil consumption test , they blew my husband off and basically said ” that they weren’t going to do anything else for him, that the test was fine . They have lied , been rude and their customer service just basically stinks . It is making a grinding sound now when you start it. What can we do to get this addressed ? We have this oil consumption issue with our 2008 Accord EXL 6 cylinder. It has become a real nightmare. The local Honda Dealer’s service department is not cooperating.

Please help. Who do we contact about this class action suit so we can get our car fixed? Is there a higher level/more cooperative contact at Honda or is there a law firm that we should contact directly?

  9. Gary says:

I filed for $377 and received a check for $325. Is the missing money the “expenses” to the lawyers? I had the error code listed in the settlement. Honestly I’m happy to get most back as I was fuming when I got the bill from dealer. Just wondering who got the the missing $50.
