Yukon SUV Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:
- Who: A Yukon SUV owner filed a class action lawsuit against General Motors, LLC.
- Why: Several popular late-model Yukon SUVs are allegedly equipped with defective tail lamp housing units that cause their brake lights to fail, increasing the risk of a rear-end collision.
- Where: The complaint was filed in California federal court.
Late-model Yukon SUV owners may be more likely to be rear-ended due to defective tail lamp housing parts, warns a class action lawsuit filed in California federal court Wednesday.
Lead plaintiff, Bruce Schramm, wants to represent other Yukon SUV owners and lessees who he says are forced to pay hundreds to repair the vehicle safety defect. Schramm claims GM is aware of the brake light problems and paid to fix it in earlier models, but refuses to address the issue in newer vehicles despite online forums “replete with concerns” about the dangerous condition.
Schramm says that the defective tail lamp housing caused both the left and right brake lights to fail in his 2017 Yukon SUV. He claims that he was forced to spend hundreds of dollars out of his own pocket to repair the problem.
“The tail lamp assembly is a fully sealed unit and was not designed to be repaired,” explains the class action lawsuit. “If there is a problem, the lamp is replaced as a complete and very expensive unit.”
Yukon SUV Defective Brake Lights
Schramm says the problem in his Yukon SUV and others stems from either a faulty LED strip, a faulty connection inside the tail lamp assembly, or a defective circuit board. In any scenario, the defect increases the risk of a rear end collision if the brake lights fail to illuminate, alleges the plaintiff.
The plaintiff wants to represent owners and lessees of the following 2017-2019 Yukon SUVs:
- Yukon
- Yukon XL
- Yukon Denali
- Yukon Denali XL
He says that he and other Yukon SUV owners would not have purchased or paid as much for the vehicles had they known about the problem. In addition to paying for repairs and facing an increased risk of collision, Schramm notes that the defect lessens the value of their Yukon SUVs.
The plaintiff says that GM is aware of the brake light defect in the 2017-2019 Yukon SUV models. In addition to a myriad of complaints filed by Yukon SUV owners, he points out that the automaker paid for the repair and replacement of defective tail lamps in earlier models.
Schramm is seeking damages for himself and Class Members.
According to a 2018 class action lawsuit, 2015-2018 Yukon SUV brakes are defective and can fail on drivers suddenly and unexpectedly – leading to potential accidents and injury as well.

Have a 2018 Yukon xl. Both tailights out. The housing is awful and the les strip that breaks inside is paper thin. Just takes a few closures of the trunk and they are bad. More than a$700 fix and major road hazard.
I have the exact issue. It is the circuit inside. I took one apart and soldered it together after gm said my 2016 Yukon xl wasn’t covered bc it was not on the same assembly line as the others. BS! The circuit has a crack on it. That is the issue.
