Ford Mustang Backup Camera Recall Overview:Â
- Who: Ford Motor Company issued a recall for more than 330,000 of its model year 2015-17 Ford Mustang vehicles due to an issue with the vehicles’ backup camera.
- Why: The issue is due to a defect with the decklid harness and camera header connectors.
- Where: The recall is nationwide.
Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for more than 330,000 of its model year 2015-17 Ford Mustangs due to a potential problem with the vehicles’ backup camera.Â
A loss of a rearview image can occur in the event electrical conductivity is lost due to either a damaged decklid harness or insufficiently soldered header connector, according to a recall document posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).Â
“A rearview camera that intermittently displays a blank or distorted image can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” the NHTSA says.Â
According to the recall, a rigid scroll tube manufactured into the decklid harness can damage camera wires, which in turn can lead to a loss of electrical conductivity.Â
The issue could also be caused if camera header connectors soldered to the vehicle’s printed circuit board are twisted, resulting in a loss of sufficient electrical connectivity, according to the recall.Â
Ford is expected to begin notifying Mustang owners of the recall by mail on Mar. 7, at which time they will be instructed to take their vehicles to a Lincoln or Ford dealer to have their rearview camera replaced and/or their decklid wiring harness inspected or repaired, according to the recall.Â
Ford Mustang Repair Will Remove Rigid Scroll Tube From Decklid Harness
The repair will include removing the rigid scroll tube to prevent damage to the harness, as well as replacing the camera with one that has been manufactured with “improved header tooling and solder paids,” according to the recall.Â
Vehicle owners will not be charged for the inspection or replacement services while a general reimbursement plan was provided by the auto manufacturer prior to a May 2021 safety recall, according to the recall.Â
Ford ended last year with the most total recalls of any auto manufacturer, including over concerns of defective Takata airbags and an issue with the underbody heat and noise insulators on certain of its F-150 pickup trucks. Â
