NHTSA air bag inflator recall overview:

  • Who: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked the government to require a recall for 52 million air bag inflators produced by auto suppliers Arc Automotive and Delphi Automotive.
  • Why: The agency says the air bag inflators could rupture, causing metal fragments to fly into the vehicle cabin.
  • Where: A recall would affect consumers nationwide.

Officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked the government to require a recall of 52 million air bag inflators manufactured by auto suppliers ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive.

During a rare public hearing last week, NHTSA officials said they are concerned the air bag inflators could rupture, causing metal fragments to fly into a vehicle cabin, Reuters reports

Delphi reportedly manufactured around 11 million of the air bag inflators through 2004 under a licensing agreement with ARC, which manufactured the remaining 41 million air bag inflators the NHTSA now wants to see recalled.

An executive with ARC argued against a recall during the public hearing, staying consistent with the company’s stance after having previously rejected a May NHTSA demand for a voluntary recall, reports Reuters.

NHTSA warns consequence of air bag inflator rupture potentially fatal

While the odds of an explosion are not high, the NHTSA reportedly said the consequences of a rupture would be “severe and potentially deadly” and that the issue has been linked to one death and seven injuries in the United States.

In the wake of ARC rejecting its voluntary recall demand, the NHTSA issued an initial decision in September that the air bag inflators should be recalled, the first step needed before it could force a recall, according to Reuters.

The recall, if it happens, would reportedly involve air bag inflators put in model year 2000 to 2018 vehicles produced by 12 automakers, including Ford, General Motors, Tesla, Toyota, Kia, BMW, Volkswagen, Stellantis, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz.

In May, General Motors agreed to recall almost 1 million vehicles equipped with ARC air bag inflators over concerns they could rupture, following an incident that left a driver with facial injuries, Reuters reports.

  9. Michelle says:

I have a 2005 Mustang that was in an accident a year ago. My chest immediately was very painful at the accident scene and my chest black & blue for several months and although the discoloring finally went away, I’ve been left with a chest that still hurts with pain that comes and goes on a daily basis throughout my upper chest area along with a partially collapsed lung, high pitched ringing in my ears along with suicide headaches that are so debilitating making it impossible to concentrate, do my job or even live a normal life. The airbag did inflate but I believe it was too late. I don’t remember.
