Consumer Reports has published an article outlining the problems that exist when doctors are too quick to prescribe antibiotics.
However, the antibiotics report doesn’t shed much light on significant concerns regarding some of these medications, including Zithromax side effects such as liver damage, heart attack, and Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
According to the article, written by Dr. John Santa, who also has a master’s degree in public health, Zithromax is a “broad spectrum” antibiotic, meaning that it can be used in a wide variety of cases. However, he argues that it should not be use as often as it is, but it should be left for dangerous diseases such as something like a staph infection.
Zithromax side effects and those of other powerful medications played a role in 20,000 deaths attributed to antibiotics. A Zithromax class action lawsuit has been filed to help victims and their families pursue compensation for their injuries.
According to Santa, hospitals alone could use less powerful alternatives at least one out of every three times a prescription is written to combat a bacterial infection.
Moving forward from the Consumer Reports article which cites data from the Centers for Disease Control, it is important for patients to have a full understanding of what risks there are, including Zithromax liver damage side effects.
The National Institutes for Health notes that the medication has been linked to two types of hepatotoxicity, which is drug induced liver damage. While rare, liver damage can occur even after a brief course of treatment. Signs of this Zithromax side effect include fatigue, itching and yellowed skin or abdominal discomfort. These symptoms can last for as many as eight weeks and even in some cases lead to vanishing bile duct syndrome, a stepping stone to liver failure.
While hepatotoxicity is a known risk for this broad spectrum antibiotic, heart arrhythmias and even the skin and mucus membrane disorder Stevens-Johnson Syndrome are Z-Pak side effects that can occur in patients who are taking the drug to treat bacterial infections. People who have experienced SJS or have a history of heart or liver problems should make sure their doctors are aware of their medical history.
Both Zithromax class action lawsuits and individual lawsuits have been filed across the country by those who allege experienced one of the dangerous Zithromax side effects such as heart attacks and Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
