Coca-Cola rewards program class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Glenn Coe filed a class action lawsuit against The Coca-Cola Co.
  • Why: Coe claims Coca-Cola runs an unlawful rewards program since it doesn’t offer anything of actual value to consumers.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.

The Coca-Cola Co. sells products with rewards program codes that do not actually benefit consumers, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Glenn Coe claims Coca-Cola’s reward program only allows consumers to donate their accumulated rewards to preselected charities of the company’s choice.

Coe argues Coca-Cola’s reward codes are effectively unlawful “trading stamps”  since consumers are unable to actually redeem them for anything of value.

“Defendant continues to sell Coke products with reward codes even though the only benefit is to donate their accumulated value to one of its selected nonprofit groups,” the Coca-Cola class action states.

Coe argues Coca-Cola’s rewards program is marketed “contrary to state law” due to it not having “legibly printed upon (their) face a cash value determined by the company in cents or any fraction thereof.”

Coca-Cola class action claims consumers unable to redeem codes for cash

Due to not having a stated cash value, consumers are unable to redeem the codes for cash when presenting them to the company, the Coca-Cola class action alleges.

“This requirement was designed to prevent customers, like Plaintiff, from being left without any value in the event of their accumulation of non-redeemable reward codes,” the class action states.

Coe claims Coca-Cola is guilty of unjust enrichment, negligent representation and fraud and in violation of multiple state consumer fraud acts, the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act and New York General Business Law

Coe wants to represent a New York class and a multistate consumer fraud subclass of individuals who have purchased a Coca-Cola product that came with a rewards code.

He demands a jury trial and requests injunctive relief along with monetary, statutory and/or punitive damages for himself and all class members.

A consumer filed a separate class action against Coca-Cola last month over claims the company failed to properly pay its workers following last year’s hack of Kronos’ timekeeping systems.

The Coca-Cola rewards program class action lawsuit is Coe v. The Coca-Cola Co., Case No. 1:22-cv-00430, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York.

I too have collected points for many years and now have no way to use them but donate.

  2. Martha I. Smith says:

I have entered codes for many years. They did stop all of a sudden. All I could do was enter codes to certain charities they choose. I do know the school did receive one check. Also, since this is the end. I hope they send the entire amount to them. They usually only send in increments of $25.00.

  3. Karen Courtney says:

I also collected Coke tops and codes from boxes for many years. If there is a class action suit, please contact me. All I could do with them was donate to my granddaughters’ schools where hopefully they will be able to redeem them for cash as intended.

  4. Thomas W Maguire says:

I too saved the coke codes to get free coke museum passes and free coke items then all of a sudden it just stopped. Hope coke is held responsible as now having the codes is worthless.

  5. Nicole Demoura says:

I have a couple thousand caps myself. They limited the number you could enter weekly, and then the program changed. They offered nothing of value so I stopped entering the codes in. I would love to be part of this lawsuit. I have so many caps.

  6. Andrea Cleaver says:

I am so happy to see someone doing something about this. I keep all my coke reward codes. I even fish them out of the trash and recycling at times. They used to offer free movie tickets, popcorn and drinks at the theaters. I’ve saved and saved hoping they would offer something good at some point again, but nothing changes. Fight the fight and I hope it causes coke to change the rewards program to actually start rewarding it’s customers again! I would love to be a part of this lawsuit if possible.

  7. Steven S says:

I have thousands of codes, off of everything from bottles to cases of Coke products. What a sad ending to a premiums program that at one time was the absolute best. Please include me in the class.

  8. Rosemarie Jackowski says:

I also have tons of caps I saved up for years in expectation of Coca Cola honoring its rewards program. Super upset with Coke and its crooked consumer practices. How can I join lawsuit?

  9. Lydia S Binns says:

MANY years ago, I entered codes from purchases of 12 pack boxes & from bottke caps of Sprite, Coke, Diet Coke, & their Orange drink. Once you accumulated enough, you could redeem for cool things like Coke tees, Sprite tees, Orange Crush tees & many other various items (which I have to this day). Then I believe sometime well before Covid, they changed to points being of ZERO benefit to consumers (so cannot qualify as rewards for customers) and only donating to charities. I have nothing against charities if they were SOME of the options. But I donate out of my pocket and therefore get to claim on yearly tax forms. IlThis week I just bought a 12 can pack of both Sprite & Coke AND the codes are no longer on the tear away flap. Meanwhile I have a gallon size ziploc packed with previous box labels & bottle caps that I never took the time to enter in hopes they’d return to a form of the original rewards point program. So count me in, they’ve been scamming their consumers with the charity ONLY points for years.

    I have over 1000 caps/codes. Frustrating situation.
