Claim up to $225 in the Toshiba Satellite Broken Hinge Class Action Settlement

By Sarah Pierce

Do you own a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that has (or had) a broken hinge? You may be eligible for a cash reimbursement and other credits for the repair of your laptop under a class action settlement.

The Toshiba Satellite Broken Hinge Class Action Settlement (which we break down here) resolves a lawsuit that claims certain models of Toshiba Satellite laptops have manufacturing defects that make the plastic housing surrounding the hinges, and the hinges themselves, prone to cracking. The class action settlement provides up to $225 for each repair made to fix the broken hinges. Other qualifying owners will be eligible to receive a cash payment of $50 or a $150 credit voucher for future purchases at Toshiba Direct.

  1. Dimitrios says:

My experience is a carbon copy of that expressed by Anton. My Toshiba Satellite P870 model (purchased in 2013) had the left hinge break off shortly after the 12 month warranty period expired (not that the warranty will have necessary been applied/honoured from what I have read here). It is a powerful 17 inch laptop with an i7 processor (2.4hz), 16GB RAM, etc and in good working order! I have looked after it and do not take it away from my desk for the most part. It is an awful shame that the quality of the workmanship has been poor. The right hinge has also weakens and creaks now threatening to break off as well. I feel cheated and will not purchase Toshiba again. I would be keen to participate in a future class action if one was available.

  2. Elanor Sodan says:

I bought a Toshiba from someone off Craigs List, so when my hinge finally broke on it I did not think much of it because it was a used computer. Well, when that one broke on me I had to buy a new laptop (which I bought from Staples, another Toshiba) and now the hinge is starting to break and there are vertical lines on the left side where the hinge is breaking. I am extremely angry because I spent $500 on this computer, and if the same thing happens as it did to my other, It will not turn on one day and I will not have a laptop, I will have wasted money (as this laptop is only two years old), and I will lose the stuff on my laptop. It is ridiculous that this product cannot be made properly, and that SO many people are experiencing the same issues. My model (Satellite C55-C527) is not on the list of laptops that qualify for reimbursement.

  3. K Harwood says:

Same here, my Satellite C55-A5281 has now broken and every time I open or close it another piece of the housing seems to fall off. It is not damaged but there are questions as to the life span of the plastic they are using (so maybe blaming the people they buy the plastic from?) and/or the tightness of the housing with the hinge at the fastening point. This is disappointing. In doing google searches this is a known issue now but was not when I purchased. However, you can freely buy replacement housing online for about $100 + plus installation I am sure – I guess this is a good secondary market for them to produce extra housing units maybe? The price of the housing vs. the price of the laptop is certainly surprising, especially given the quality but since it’s still working I will look into that further instead of disposing of a working computer. I would be interested in participating if another suit starts.

  4. L Bell says:

My hinges also broke, I KNEW not to buy another Toshiba but the price was so good now I know why. I’ve learned my lesson. Toshiba NEVERL

  5. Joshua L Balbierz says:

I’m in the same boat. Toshiba Satellite s875d. Hinges got stiff and broke the plastic on the right side where the heat vent is.

  6. Bret Cohen says:

I had 2 of the Toshiba Model P845-S4200 and on both, the LCD hinges broke. I ended up buying new laptops (Dell). Is this still open or is there a new suit available?

  7. BG says:

My laptop is under warranty and Toshiba says this is not a manufacturers defect.
The hinge on left side came off and I am unable to close it.

It’s time to take a legal channel as this is an going problem that Toshiba is denying.

  8. Jo says:

Sati lite l55. Both hinges. Less than 2 years old.

  9. Anton says:

My Toshiba P850 had the left hinge break which I thought was just a fluke. Been using it for over 18 months this way until the right one just broke so I searched and found this is a common problem. I have been very loyal to Toshiba for many years until I see this is a common problem. This laptop never traveled and was on a desk and rarely opened and closed which leads me to believe this hinge design is very very poor. Such a simple thing for them to change and it appears nothing has been changed. This is my last Toshiba despite being very happy with them on all other accounts. Another class action is welcomed!

    1. Dimitrios says:

exactly same experience as yours Anton!

    2. Dimitrios says:

Exactly the same experience as yours Anton.

  10. Jae Won Lim says:

My Toshiba L55 also got a broken hinge after stiffness within a year. I was very careful and hardly ever closed my laptop. I never abused the laptop. Based on my previous experiences, I will never buy Toshiba ever again for their build quality and design flaw of the hinge. They will never admit that it was their design flaw. What a joke. Listen to the people on Amazon reviews on Toshiba L55. Many people complain that they all have broken hinge within months after purchase. Toshiba never admits their design defect. I have never experienced hinge problems with Dell or HP laptops, yet I have experienced three hinge problems with Toshiba, one with Sony Vaio. This constitutes another class action lawsuits for Toshiba laptops.

    1. Karen says:

My L55 has had a left broken hinge for many months and when I got it sort of repaired they told me the right one was getting that way also. I thought this hinge issue was my fault until I found this website. I have never had this problem with any of my other laptops. VERY DISAPPOINTING!

      1. Clarence Butler says:

My Toshiba Satellite L55 was inherently defective due to a product liability design flaw as both hinges and hinge covers began deteriorating shortly after purchase and ultimately needed to be replaced. Toshiba needs to do right by their customers,as this was a new purchase and I was the only user of this computer, treating it with maximum care. The online comments demonstrate that this was a systemic problem.
