Claim up to $225 in the Toshiba Satellite Broken Hinge Class Action Settlement

By Sarah Pierce

Do you own a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that has (or had) a broken hinge? You may be eligible for a cash reimbursement and other credits for the repair of your laptop under a class action settlement.

The Toshiba Satellite Broken Hinge Class Action Settlement (which we break down here) resolves a lawsuit that claims certain models of Toshiba Satellite laptops have manufacturing defects that make the plastic housing surrounding the hinges, and the hinges themselves, prone to cracking. The class action settlement provides up to $225 for each repair made to fix the broken hinges. Other qualifying owners will be eligible to receive a cash payment of $50 or a $150 credit voucher for future purchases at Toshiba Direct.

If you purchased or leased a new Toshiba Satellite Notebook between April 1, 2000 and March 12, 2010 that has the following model numbers, you are eligible:

Toshiba Satellite 1000

Toshiba Satellite 1005

  1. Judith says:

My hinge on my L55t-B5271 broke 2 days after my warranty expired called corporate and left messages. No one has called me back. I have tape holding the screen together. The right side of screen is cracked. . I cant close the laptop and must stay open at all times. I have an older toshiba that is super sturdy . This newer model is POS

  2. Lori says:

I have Satelite L55 and the Left hinge is coming out and case not shutting all the way for about 3 months now.I purchased it almost 3 years ago, Nov 2014. Sure would be great to do another class action lawsuit. If they knew it was defective years ago why didn’t they fix it?

  3. Eloi George says:

What is it about the left hinge, specifically? Toshiba S55t purchased in 2015.
The problem is compounded because Toshiba refuses to release any Service Manuals, preventing people from being able to repair it themselves.

  4. Tom B. says:

Both of my hinges and plastic housing are cracked and the right metal hinge completely came out. The right plastic housing is completely out. I use that now to hold the screen from falling backwards. This is on my Toshiba Satellite S55t-B5273NR. I have duct tape holding it together , also , the right hinge area flops in the breeze. The only thing connected is the wires. I can send pics if asked. thanks Tom B.

  5. Ron Bowers says:

Purchased my toshiba satellite new in 2015. Has broken hinge as previous toshiba’s noted in class action lawsuit. Apparently Toshiba has not rectified the problem since class action lawsuit of 2010. Can this problem which faces newer models result in another class action.

  6. Christina Gregory says:

Is this still an active class action lawsuit? My hinge broke on my Toshiba Satellite L55 and I would like to get it repaired asap.

  7. Ronnie says:

I’ve had my toshiba laptop for 2 DAYSSS!! The left hinge is already off? Worst laptop ever

  8. Lucretia says:

Toshiba need to take this raggedy laptop back and give me my money back..still making defective laptops. Poor quality I wish I would’ve known.

  9. Nancy Scarvelli says:

    I purchased a Toshiba Satellite model L55T on Dec 13, 2014.
I also purchased the extended warranty which I had to use within a year because the seam on the laptop monitor above the right hinge was splitting and the top wasn’t closing right.
It was repaired and a new top put on.
It is doing the exact same thing again and now I am out of warranty.
    Poorly made product it appears.
I can’t afford a new one so just hope it keeps working.

    1. Ken says:

These are a weak Design and the Plastics in the housing tend to fail. (Have seen Numerous instances). Heavy screen and no Support. Contact me I will get all to the right lawyers regarding.

      1. James Florance says:

Can we get Attorney to start class action.Mine is Satellite S50 B- 2 1/2 years old
        broken left side hinge.

      2. James says:

I have a Satellite P870 that the left hinge is messed up on. Want to pry apart when opening and closing the screen.

  10. Michael says:

Toshiba Satellite, purchased around November 2014. Right hinge started showing issues mere months after; completely broke about 6 weeks ago. Helluva task finding a Toshiba repair shop. There are lots of options for a replacement, other than Toshiba. That brand shall never (dis)grace my house again.
