Yaz, Yasmin DVTCalifornia plaintiff Stefeny Huizar is suing Bayer Pharmaceuticals for the injuries she suffered after ingesting the oral contraceptives Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, and Beyaz alleging in oral contraceptives were the direct cause of multiple blood-clot injuries which required hospitalization.

Through the years of 2002 and 2011, Huizar had been prescribed each birth control product on separate sessions, trying to identify which product was best suited for her. However, as a result of that discovery process, the plaintiff developed multiple blood clots in her spleen in April 2010, which she still contends with to this day.

Huizar had tried each of these birth control pills without any awareness that blood-clot injuries were a possible side effect.  She nor her physician were made aware of this association until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a public warning about the link several years ago.

There were no warnings or indications on any of the labels to warn against these side effects, nor had the defendant company notified the plaintiff in any way.  Huizar asserts that she never would have taken any of the birth control pills if she had known about this side effect.

Huizar’s charges against Bayer includes negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

Overview of Drospirenone Birth Control Complications

Yasmin, Yaz, Ocella, and BeYaz, are all combination oral contraceptives (COCs), which means each of these pills are composed of progestin and estrogen. In addition, each birth control pill is composed of a fourth-generation progestin called drospirenone, and an estrogen hormone called ethinyl estradiol.  Lastly, each birth control pill had received approval from the FDA be sold as oral contraceptives, as well as other approved usages. Each of the mentioned birth control pills are manufactured by Bayer.

Up until the approval of Yasmin in 2001, drospirenone had never been used in any oral contraceptive, and has been a famous selling point for Bayer since Yasmin’s release.  However, in light of recent medical discovery and thousands of birth control lawsuits, Bayer has started to backtrack their claims about drospirenone due to its heavy association with blood-clot injuries. According to patient injury reports, women who had used Yasmin, Yaz, Ocella or BeYaz found themselves suffering from various blood-clot injuries.

Due to drospirenone having only been recently developed, there is little known medical information known about it. Many experts have attributed the COCs complications to drospirenone, and the lack of understanding Bayer has about it before marketing it.

One known fact about drospirenone is that it is a diuretic, which means it increases the potassium levels in the blood. Unfortunately, this causes the blood flow to slow considerably, which allows for the possibility of blood-clot formation. Conditions linked to this occurrence include arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, stroke, transient ischemic attacks, blood clots, embolisms, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and death.

Drospirenone Litigation Movement

Yasmin and Yaz lawsuits were consolidated into a multidistrict litigation in an Illinois federal court.
