a2 Milk Company is recalling more than 63,000 units of its a2 Platinum Premium Infant Formula due to potential contamination with cereulide toxin.
The recall, announced on May 2, affects three specific batches of the infant formula, which were distributed in the United States through the company’s website, Amazon and Meijer stores.
The affected batches include batch numbers 2210269454, 2210324609 and 2210321712, with use-by dates ranging from July 15, 2026, to Jan. 21, 2027.
The recall was initiated after additional testing detected the cereulide toxin, a heat-stable toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus, which can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting.
“Illness occurs through the consumption of food contaminated with the toxin and preparing formula with hot water does not eliminate it,” the recall notice says.
Consumers urged not to use affected a2 infant formula due to serious health risk
The a2 Platinum Premium Infant Formula recall highlights a serious health risk posed by the cereulide toxin, which can lead to symptoms developing within 30 minutes to six hours after ingestion.
Infants, due to their developing immune systems, are particularly vulnerable and may require medical attention if symptoms, such as dehydration, occur.
The recall notice advises consumers to discontinue use of the product immediately and to dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
