Hurricane Ida Entergy Outages Class Action Lawsuit Overview:
- Who: A group of New Orleans Residents have lodged a class action lawsuit against power company Entergy Corp and its affiliates.
- What: The residents claim that Entergy was negligent in its maintenance of the New Orleans energy system, resulting in almost a million people losing power after Hurricane Ida.
- Where: The lawsuit is pending in district court in Louisiana.
Louisiana utility Entergy used a “bubble gum and super glue” approach to maintaining the power grid, putting almost a million of its customers at risk during outages after Hurricane Ida, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
In a class action complaint filed against Entergy over the weekend in a Louisiana court, more than a dozen of the utility’s customers, including residents and businesses, allege its negligence left hundreds of thousands of people in the dark after Hurricane Ida.
Entergy Customers Left Powerless After Hurricane Ida
After Ida battered the southeast region of Louisiana last month, nearly one million of the company’s customers lost power and many homes and businesses were left without electricity for weeks, WBRZ reports.
The storm knocked out major Entergy power structures, leaving New Orleans completely in the dark.
The lawsuit accuses Entergy of having a “grossly inadequate maintenance and inspection program,” antiquated equipment, shoddy maintenance, and of conducting a campaign of lies to the City, the state, and their customers.
“Entergy created a system that could not and would not sustain even a hurricane with wind gusts below 100 miles per hour,” the class action states.
The customers say Entergy made the decision not to invest in the underground transmission of electricity, which could have assured regular consistent and sustained protected service to all their customers, “not just in affluent neighborhoods.”
“Instead, Entergy chose the bubble gum and super glue approach to protect their billions of dollars instead of their customers, who every month paid Entergy so that they would not have to live in darkness.”
The lawsuit says Entergy’s “greed and lies” set the stage for hundreds of thousands of people to be left without refrigeration, air conditioning, and in many cases, sewerage disposal after the hurricane.
The customers are suing for negligence and breach of contract. They’re seeking certification of the class action, damages, establishment of a management plan for the company, fees and costs.
Entergy faced legal action after another record-breaking storm led to widespread power outages in Texas last winter.
Meanwhile, four nursing home residents in Louisiana have also filed a class action lawsuit against real-estate mogul Bob Dean and seven nursing homes he owns for the “nightmarish” conditions residents endured inside Dean’s warehouse following evacuation orders for Hurricane Ida.

Absolutely. Not only this but Entergy withholds energy from people. How is legal? It’s unethical, unprofessional and deplorable to do this to people; especially those with disabilities. The whole permit process is outrageous. Why does someone who is renting need a permit? So; you pay for a permit, then deposit on electric , then a connection fee too? After all of this you’re paying rent on a home you can’t live in because Entergy says they are “backlogged” and won’t turn your electric for 2 weeks!! However , the same story comes from people all over the state and different states? Their backlog is not my problem. If I don’t do my job , I get fired! I am hired to provide a service, if I don’t I know I’m reprimanded, period!
Yes we get charged all kind of different fees every month including hurricane fees, the horrible thing about it, is I live in Washington parish between Bogalusa & Franklinton La & from what I hear the papermill in Bogalusa powers entergy for free so they shouldn’t have any excuse for their equipment to not be up to par. Please include me in this.
Yes Entergy should be held accountable. It’s time for these multi billion dollar companies to stop being so greedy. Here in Louisiana we even have to pay a storm restoration fee every month in order for our power to be restored. It’s not enough that we have these high electric bills.
