Volkswagen of America has recalled select Model Year 2018-2021 Atlas and 2020 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles due to an air bag fault in the front passenger seat.
The recall was published on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website March 29 and affects 143,053 vehicles.
“Owners are urged to not let anyone sit in the front passenger seat until the vehicle is fixed,” the recall states.
According to the manufacturer, the passenger occupant detection system may experience a fault in the wiring, which could deactivate the front passenger air bag even when the seat is occupied.
A deactivated air bag will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the front seat passenger, the company said.
The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Do not allow passengers to sit in the front seat, recall states
Until the free recall repair is developed and completed, owners should not allow anyone to sit in the front passenger seat, Volkswagen said.
The automaker is developing a remedy and will notify affected owners as soon as the repair is available, it added.
Volkswagen and Audi previously reached a class action lawsuit over air bags. The settlement benefits individuals who owned or leased certain Volkswagen or Audi vehicles containing a Takata air bag between Feb. 9, 2016, and Nov. 10, 2021. Find out more.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen and Audi also have agreed to a $3.5 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims their customers’ information was stolen in a data breach spanning several years.
