Toshiba, Toyota, Ford, BMW recalls overview:

  • Who: Toshiba, Toyota, Ford, BMW and several biometric safe manufacturers recalled products last week. 
  • Why: The top recalls involve product safety and possible risk of harm. 
  • Where: The recalls are effective in the United States; the Toshiba recall is also effective in Canada. 

Several popular companies, retailers and manufacturers announced recalls last week for products that may pose a risk of injury to consumers. Here are Top Class Actions’ top recalls for the week of Feb. 26.

Toshiba Laptop adapters recalled due to fire, burn hazard 

Dynabook Americas Inc. announced a product recall for more than 16 million Toshiba laptop AC adapters due to a potential fire hazard. The adapters may overheat and spark, according to the recall notice. 

The company received 679 reports of the recalled AC adapters overheating or catching fire, resulting in 43 minor burn injuries, the recall notice states.

The affected adapters, which were either bundled with Toshiba laptops or sold separately, carry date codes ranging from April 2008, to Dec. 2012, according to the recall. 

Dynabook Americas urges consumers to contact the company for a free replacement. Consumers should send a photo of the AC adapter with the power cord cut to dba-acadapter2024@dynabook.com.

Toyota recalls Tundra, Sequoia, Lexus LX600 vehicles due to transmission issues

Toyota initiated a recall for approximately 280,000 vehicles, including model year 2022-2024 Tundras, 2023-2024 Sequoias and 2022-2024 Lexus LX 600s. 

The vehicles may slowly advance even after the transmission is shifted to neutral, the recall notice states. Certain components within the transmission can remain engaged, allowing engine power to transmit to the wheels. 

Owners of the affected vehicles can determine if their cars are part of the recall by entering their vehicle identification number or license plate details on Toyota’s website, according to the recall notice. 

Toyota says it will notify affected vehicle owners by late April 2024, and customers can contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 800-331-4331 or the Lexus Brand Engagement Center at 800-255-3987 for further assistance.

Recall initiated for Ford Expeditions, Lincoln Navigators over seat belt defect

Ford issued a recall that impacts more than 77,000 vehicles from model years 2018 to 2020. The recall affects Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt retractor pretensioners manufactured Oct. 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019. 

The front and/or passenger seat belts in the affected vehicles may fail to retract or extend, posing a potential risk of injury in the event of a collision, according to the recall notice.

Ford is contacting owners of the recalled vehicles through mail and instructing them to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer. The inspection involves assessing the production codes on both front seat belt retractors, with replacements performed as necessary, the recall notice states. 

BMW issues recall for nearly 80,000 vehicles due to potential brake malfunction

BMW recently issued a recall for nearly 80,000 vehicles due to potential malfunctions in their integrated brake systems. 

A malfunction in the integrated brake system could lead to a loss of power brake assist or disrupt the proper functioning of the anti-lock brake and dynamic stability control systems, the recall notice states.

The recall involves certain of the following models and model years:

  • 2023: X1 xDrive28i
  • 2023-2024: X7 xDrive40i, X7 M60i, XB7, XM, 740i, 740i xDrive, 760i xDrive, i7 eDrive50, i7 xDrive60, i7 M70
  • 2024: X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 M60i, X5M, X5 xDrive50e, X6 xDrive40i, X6M60i, X6M, 750e xDrive, i5 eDrive40, i5 M60,530i, 530i xDrive, Rolls-Royce Spectre

To address the issue, BMW says it plans to have dealers replace the integrated braking systems in the affected vehicles at no cost to the owners, according to the recall notice. It anticipates sending owner notification letters April 5, 2024. 

Companies recall biometric safes due to injury, death risk

Awesafe, MouTec, Machir,and Bulldog issued recalls for approximately 124,000 safes, citing a defective biometric lock feature that may compromise security. 

The recalls emphasize a potential failure in the biometric lock, allowing unauthorized individuals access to the safes. As a precautionary measure, consumers should stop using the biometric feature, remove the batteries and rely on the key option provided with the recalled products.

Awesafe’s recall involves approximately 60,000 biometric gun safes. MouTec recalled 2,200 of its model No. QCJJ01 BBRKIN Biometric Gun Safes. Machir recalled 24,820 biometric personal safes, and Bulldog recalled 33,500 of its Bulldog Magnum Biometric Pistol Vaults, Magnum Biometric Pistol Vaults with Shelf and Magnum Biometric Top Load Pistol Vaults. 

To facilitate the recall process, the recall notice advises customers to disable the biometric reader on their safes and email a photo of the disabled reader to the respective companies: Awesafe at recall@awesafeus.com, MouTec BBRKIN at support@bbrkin.com, Machir at info@machir.com and Bulldog at recall@bulldogcases.net
