Laptop adapters recall overview:

  • Who: Dynabook Americas Inc. is recalling 15.5 million Toshiba laptop AC adapters in the United States and 1.3 million in Canada.
  • Why: The adapters can overheat and spark, leading to burn and fire hazards, the Toshiba recall says.
  • Where: The laptop adapters recall is valid in the United States and Canada.

Dynabook Americas Inc. has issued a recall on Toshiba laptop adapters due to a fire risk.

More than 16 million laptop AC adapters are included in the recall, which Dynabook said it issued because the adapters can overheat and spark. Dynabook Americas is a subsidiary of Dynabook Inc., which formerly sold its laptops under the Toshiba brand.

The AC adapters either came with a Toshiba laptop or were sold separately. The affected adapters have date codes between April 2008 and December 2012, the recall says.

Consumers can visit the Dynabook Americas website to confirm whether their adapters’ serial and model numbers are included in the laptop fire risk recall.

Toshiba recall: 43 reports of burn injuries from defective adapters

Dynabook said it has received 679 reports of the recalled AC adapters overheating or catching on fire, melting and burning. There were also 43 minor burn injuries included in these reports.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Dynabook Americas is asking consumers to immediately stop using the AC adapters and contact the company for a free replacement. Consumers should send a photo of the AC adapter with the power cord cut to dba-acadapter2024@dynabook.com.

VRURC recalled about 190,000 portable chargers in July 2023 after one caught fire during a commercial flight.
