Tesla has issued a recall of more than 40,000 of its model year 2017-2021 Model S and Model X vehicles over concerns their power steering assist may stop working on rough roads or potholes.
The company says it released an over-the-air software update to recalibrate the power steering system and remedy the issue, according to a safety recall report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“Reduced or lost power steering assist does not affect steering control but could require greater steering effort from the driver, particularly at low speeds,” the Tesla recall states.
Tesla notified drivers of a loss of power steering assist by audio and visual alerts on their vehicle’s instrument cluster, according to the Tesla recall.
Tesla identified issue with power steering assist last month
Tesla identified the issue last month after it “identified an increasing rate of alerts related to the updated EPAS calibration values” on the recalled 2017 to 2021 Model S and Model X vehicles.
Tesla says it has identified 314 vehicle alerts that may be related to the recall but that it is not aware of any instances of injury or death.
More than 97% of the recalled vehicles have installed the update to resolve the issue as of Nov. 1, according to the Tesla recall.
In September, Tesla announced a recall of almost 1.1 million vehicles over concerns their power window automatic reversal systems could malfunction and put excessive pressure on fingers.
