Kia recalled more than 71,000 Sportage vehicles model years 2008-2009 as the engine compartment can catch fire while the vehicle is parked or driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) website posted the recall notice Oct. 24. It applies to 71,704 of Kia’s 2008-2009 Sportage vehicles that were previously recalled under another fire risk warning in 2016.

According to the more recent recall, an engine compartment fire originating from around the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may occur while the vehicles are parked or driving.

Drivers may receive a warning of the engine fire in the form of illumination of the ABS warning light, burning/melting smell and/or smoke from the engine compartment, the Kia Sportage recall states.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
