Hyundai recall overview:

  • Who: Hyundai recalled more than 44,000 model year 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport vehicles.
  • Why: The anti-lock brake system module can malfunction, causing a short circuit and fire risk.
  • Where: The Hyundai recall is active in the United States.

Hyundai expanded a fire risk recall, adding more than 44,000 model year 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sports to its list of recalled vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website posted the latest recall Oct. 27. It applies to 44,396 2018 Santa Fe Sport vehicles.

According to the recall, the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module can malfunction and cause an electrical short, which could result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

“Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete,” the Hyundai recall notice says.

The latest recall is in addition to the approximately 357,000 2016 to 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles recalled earlier this year for the same safety defect. Hyundai has now recalled more than 400,00 vehicles for the same issue.

To date, there have been four fires in the United States associated with the defect, the automaker says. No injuries have been reported.

Hyundai recall says vehicle owners can receive free repair

Owners can take their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for a repair free of charge, the company says. It expects to mail owner notification letters Dec. 26, 2022.

In August, Hyundai and Kia recalled 281,000 vehicles due to a fire risk, after the companies originally recalled nearly half a million vehicles in February for similar reasons.

And last month, Kia recalled more than 71,000 Sportage vehicles model years 2008 and 2009 as the engine compartment can catch fire while the vehicle is parked or driving, in another expansion of a 2016 recall.

  1. Russ & JessCohen says:

We own a 2018 Santa Fe LTD AWD and it has a had recurring problem with the engine getting sluggish & racing multiple times now over the last 8 months or so. This spring we took it into the dealer and they said the car was 4.0 Qts. low on oil but nothing else could be found. There was absolutely no evidence of an oil leak. So they refilled the crank case returned the car.

In June we took it to get new tires at WheelWorks and during their courtesy inspection they noticed that there was very little oil in the engine yet again yet there was still no evidence of an oil leak. We paid for them to add another 4.5 Qts. of oil.

In September she was again acting up so we took the Santa Fe to another trusted & certified mechanic for her regular service and he found that there was absolutely no oil in the crank case. We paid for him to put in 6.0 Qts. of oil and he told us that he has seen this on a number of Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs lately and that there was no specific recall issued for this problem from the manufacturer. He told us to take it back to the dealer and make them look fix the source of replace the engine.

So we immediately went back to the dealer and were told that they could not find evidence of a leak or any other problem, though they had had the Santa Fe in for the same issue months before (but now we had just had the oil refilled). They said they have to document the problem over time and we now have to bring the vehicle back in every 1000 miles for the next 3000-5000 miles to have them check the oil level to “see that there is a an excessive loss of oil” and then send it off to the manufacturer and wait for response. We are just about to take her in for the 1st and it’s going to be a process.

It is a miracle the engine has not seized due a repeated lack of oil. There has been no evidence that it is exiting in the exhaust, nor any sign of a leak.

2017 Santa Fe Ultimate AWD 3.0 V6 engine seized at 103,000 miles, 3.5 qts low on oil between oil changes. No warning lights, no low oil messages, or low oil pressure alarms, just seized while driving down freeway.

Hyundai told me last fall that my 2017 Santa Fe, sport was not in any engine recall. I’m filing because Nov 2022, their white paint is defective and refuse to pay due to being 5 dates late from a letter they mailed in beginning of March 2023, and no date on envelope, their recall notice, I had no idea about the barcode. I’m elderly, couldn’t scan with the phone I had. They’re scamming lots of people by using no dates and only scanning barcodes. I’m so disgusted with them after all my business with them and I sent friends there. They gave me 6 yrs free protection THAT I PAID FOR IN 2020! And refuse to reimburse me for a paint pen THEY HAD TO ORDER…THEY OR ANY OTHER COMPANY CAN MAKE MY PAINT IN A PEN, ITS A 3TIER PAINT!
Shame on Hyundai of NEWPORT, RI

I have a 2017 Sante Fe Sport. I have yet to receive anything about this problem.

  5. Andrea Mendoza says:

This was an email I sent to Hyundai USA. After how I was treated and lied to. My 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T has been inoperable since 1/17/2022. The dealership has had it 2x in over a month for the exact same issues. Without repair. Full neglect.

Did you get a response from the dealership as to why the ABS Module on my vehicle was not inspected or replaced when it was first at the dealership from 12/19/22-01/07/23 knowing there was an issue with the manufacture of the ABS unit? Or why the dealership ignored my concerns about safety when I told them about the lights, smoke and burning odor that coincide with the statements in the photos I have provided on this email? My vehicle had to be jump started when I picked it up on 01/07/23. The second time my vehicle malfunctioned on 01/08/23 in the EXACT manner as it did the first time once on 12/15/22 when the abs lights illuminated on the dash and on 12/17/22 when the vehicle locked up, braked on its own, began smoking from the engine and the lights came on the dash. On 1/09/23 another mobile mechanic came to inspect it and had to jump start it. He said it needed a new battery and that it needed to go back to the dealership as they did not diagnose any issue including a bad battery. Another miss if the inspection was done to protocol.

My vehicle was given back to me after they failed to “replicate” or even attempt to find the solution to what I expressed. I was directed to take photos and videos for them to view just as I have sent to you via the case file. I was told by Trish that she would send me an email and text so I could send them, she did not follow through. I called countless times to escalate my concerns and was condescended to, treated with disrespect, and felt as if my concerns were going unheard. Had I been informed by Hyundai of the other indicators such as burning odor, smoke from engine, or illuminated dash lights. I would’ve told them to keep it until in their words it “replicated” the smoke, lights on the dash, burning odor. Their lack of care for consumer safety shows there was either no communication between Hyundai and the dealership service technicians at Clay Cooley for a resolution to this manufacturer defect. Or the technicians lack of concern to fix a life threatening issue. They failed to protect the safety of myself, my children, and my pets by allowing me to take a vehicle that could’ve burned us to death. Shame on Clay Cooley Hyundai for what seems like intentional deception on a resolution to the safety concerns I expressed countless times. I should not have had to research to find what I did to validate the defect by Hyundai. This information should’ve been given to me for the safety and well being of myself and family.

The level of anxiety, mental, and emotional stress this entire experience has put my family through has caused my chronic health conditions to flare. I have had to see my dr for medication to try to control it. The financial stress of having to pay for rental, still pay a car payment without having a car due to the defect, and pay for medical care due to this experience is unacceptable.

The extent of this damage was absolutely the cause of the faulty ABS system manufactured by Hyundai and the neglect of the service department at Clay Cooley Hyundai. I am deeply disappointed at the lack of accountability on every service technician, manager, and GM in that establishment and their knowledge to complete a resolution on a defect their customer is communicating about not once but countless times to various individuals at higher levels each time. I had enough of their lack of care or empathy to my concerns and finally contacted Hyundai USA because, I hit a wall and broke down into tears over how I was mistreated and how my vehicle was what seemed to be intentionally misdiagnosed so Hyundai didn’t have to deal with it and blame the owner somehow. Had someone given care they wouldn’t have allowed a potential death trap to be released knowingly. In speaking to Trisha today she said that on my request after explaining this to her that she could request the work be covered by Hyundai but they would probably not do work because the warranty was expired. She tried to tell me that because I was not the original owner I am at fault for a manufacture defect. I was disgusted to hear this and once again I am spoken down to and feel as if Hyundai is wiping their hands clean of a known defect.

  9. Ayse Howard says:

My vehicle did catch on fire due to this reason. I cant seem to find a lawyer since there was no injury. Any help would be great

  10. A. ratliff says:

Hi, my Santa Fe has been over using oil and requiring additional oil changes and oil replacements. My engine has been malfunctioning also. I feel since seeing this recall that my vehicle isn’t safe to drive with children. There’s also something wrong with my tire or brakes. It came out of nowhere and scares the life out of me. I’m still financing on this suv and I think my vehicle needs to be replaced.

    1. Tonja Wilson says:

I agree my vehicle is the same way I feel it should be replaced as well.

    2. Karen Walker says:

My Santa Fe also has been over using oil and requiring frequent oil changes.
